Most Days One Mug Of Coffee Is Enough For Me...

...but I will admit to as many as three mugs of it on some days. I cannot imagine drinking 23 cups of it, or dealing with the jolt that 23 cups worth of caffeine (taken all at once) would give me. That was the amount of caffeine reportedly found in a teenager's body after he died from caffeine overdose (source). His parents are now suing Amazon, among others, for wrongful death.

It is sad things like this happen but it is also about time we start taking responsibility for our own actions - and I think that includes even teenagers. The substance was legal to possess, legal to sell, and reportedly came with warnings on the package. As I see it, mom and dad understandably mourn the loss of their son but it was not Amazon, the manufacturers or other distributors, who were responsible for his death. Their son was responsible for his own passing.

As Liberal As His Brother - Or Maybe Worse

If Jeb Bush runs for the presidency, as in actually is nominated by the Rebooblicans, I will send in a write in vote for myself. Now he is spewing forth the proposition to extend the tax breaks for wind energy production. Heck, maybe he is another Obama but in RINO's guise (source). We need a man, in the White House,  who thinks more like this: "In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem." (source).

Too bad they did not clone Reagan.

Oh The Humanity - Oh The Homophobia...

...or so will the LGBT folks soon all be screaming about the release of info relative to several scientific studies of identical twins that proves homosexuality is not genetic. Nope - you were not born ...a three dollar bill homosexual or bisexual - you at sometime in your life developed a taste for same sex genitalia. Then, subsequent to you having become gay, chances are, you may well choose to become heterosexual. Reportedly, there are more people alive today who switched to being heterosexual than all the current homosexuals and bisexuals combined.

I am happy to report that I have always belonged to the most consistent and stable group:

"The authors were pro-gay and they commented that the only stability was among the heterosexuals, who stayed the same year after year."

I Had No Idea - It's White History Month

It is about time that the forgotten race has it's history honored with its own month. Oh wait a minute, is that ruffling feathers! See more here; and imagine that some arsehat actually filed a police report because of the sign in the shop owner's window. So - it's alright to celebrate a 'black history month' but it is not okay to have a similar one for white history! Go figure, because if celebrating black history, and not also white history, is not a racism then nothing is racist.

Yesterday Was Lou Costello's Birthday...

...and any of my young readers are probably saying "Lou who". We old timers remember him though. Well, at least I remember his movie and show reruns anyway; I was 3 just under 3 1/2 years old when he died. I do remember though that he and his partner Bud Abbott made me laugh, and I laughed a lot at that. The world would have been a better place had he lived a longer life, he died at 53 from a heart attack; Abbott died at 74. If you ever want to see a funny movie - watch Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, it is a classic.  If you want to get a quick taste of their routine, watch their shorts on YouTube. Here is just one example of how Abbott & Costello kept me laughing and in this one Lou wins:

I Remember When They Taught Shooting Like This

I wasn't long into my career when teaching his type of shooting was discontinued in my agency but in essence it is what we were taught. Basically you drew from the holster, raised the pistol upwards on about a 45 degree angle (to where she has it when her elbow is bent) and when you got it at about eye level you sort of threw it out toward your target just as the harlot lady  in the gif is doing.

You can see this sort of a thing in some old cowboy and or detective movies and if you are lucky you might see it in old footage taken at a police range. I saw it a lot, on the range, at work . It was almost always the preferred way of drawing and shooting with the old timers back then; that was in the early 1980s. It does not work very well and what it mostly does is causes you to shoot like crap if you shoot as soon as your arm is extended, otherwise it makes you take longer to shoot good because you pretty much need to wait for your hand to stop bobbing up and down to get on target.

I think that drawing and immediately punching the pistol out toward your target and up toward eyelevel (or just below for fairly close in point shooting) in one smooth move is the way to go, that of course being if there is enough distance between you and your assailant. Otherwise, draw and shoot from the hip if your assailant is within easy reaching distance of your firearm. Hip shooting requires lots of practice folks, and stance makes a lot of difference with it, so don't plan on hip shooting in a real self defense situation unless you practice it first and only do that after someone trains you in how to properly perform it in the first place. Hip shooting can be a good remedy for preventing a takeaway. Remember my recent post in which I said you never want to offer your pistol to your opponent for an easy takeaway.

Three Shots To The Chest Were Found Fully Justified...

...to bring down a machete wielding intruder in the case of a man who broke though an apartment door and attempted an attack of the person living inside the apartment.

The only possible way I can see to fault the shooter was that he fired all three to the chest and did not try two to the chest and one to the head but why split hairs! The bad guy was sentenced in January (yeah - he lived).More on the story here.

The Old Ammo Switcharoo

I received a call from my local FFL today. They let me know that an ammo order I had placed with Palmetto State Armory had been received by them. I went there and picked up the box, brought it home, opened it up and found forty 50 round boxes of Magtech 22LR ammo wrapped in plastic wrap. I figured something was not right since I was pretty sure I had not recently ordered 2,000 rounds of 22LR ammo as far as I could remember.

I checked my order and confirmed my suspicion that something was amiss because I had ordered 100 rounds of Prvi Partizan 308 Win and 500 rounds of Magtech 22LR. It seems I received an order for someone with the initials JK in MI as there was a packing slip inside the shipping box with his information and showing his order had been for the forty boxes of the 22LR ammo. Earlier today, I missed a call from a MI area code but the person did not leave a message.

I shot off an email to PSA and am sure they will take care of it. I also called JK as the number recorded on my cell was the same as the one on the packing slip. He told me he had received my order, had called PSA, they subsequently issued him a UPS label and he already went to UPS to drop off my order to return it to PSA. I hope PSA will give him something a little extra for having him go out of his way to go to UPS to return the order and because he will have to wait even longer than expected to receive his order.

I hope likewise for me from PSA and time will tell. For now, I will patiently await an answer to my email. By the way, I emailed them because I did not want to wait on hold for a long time, a thing for which PSA has some notoriety. In fact, JK told me he was on hold, I think, for a half an hour before he got to speak to someone. I can be patient waiting for a reply to an email but I am not a happy camper when I am on the phone on hold for more than  minute or two; a half hour would have gotten me pretty disgruntled.

Oh well, mistakes happen and I am sure PSA will make the return painless or at least as painless as a trip to the dentist for a root canal for me. All kidding aside, I have ordered from PSA quite a few times now and never had a problem like this with any other orders that I can remember. They take a bit longer than most to ship out orders but that is okay by me since they usually have some great prices and have excellent customer service in my experience.

You know, the perfect resolution to this issue, at least for me, would be for PSA to tell me that if I wanted it, they would allow me to keep the 2,000 22LR rounds for the cost of my original order and I could reorder the .308 ammo if I still wanted it. That way, the cost of the 22LR ammo would amount to .0627 per round (shipped). When is the last time you saw 22LR for a bottom line of $31.35 a brick? It has been awhile now since I saw it that low priced but I suppose that it is not going to happen. Yet, I can do some wishful thinking now and again.

I just thought of something else, I had to pay $10 for the FFL transfer here in NY for ammo that I was not to have received. I hope my FFL will transfer the correct order, once I receive it, for free. Otherwise, PSA will, in my estimation, owe me $10. Time will tell how it all works out.

Ferguson - Did Any Rational Person Expect Otherwise

Officer Darren Wilson, formally of the Ferguson, MO PD was exonerated by the Department of Justice. I would have been totally flabbergasted, and convinced that our laws were nothing more than a sham, had the decision on Officer Darren Wilson been otherwise. The leftist lunatics who protested this shooting, especially those who resorted to violence, should be ashamed of themselves. Hopefully, any who turned to violence, during those protests, will be prosecuted. More info here.

Ammo Transfers In New York - Finding A Willing FFL

There I was ranting away on a gun forum last night about how I could not understand why someone would have gone to Gander Mountain to purchase ammunition at $69.99 per range-pack of 180 rounds when I had just found an online dealer selling it for $43 per box plus shipping. I really don't care where you spend your money, go ahead and pay more at a place like Gander Mountain, heck I shop there at times just not usually for ammo. Where you shop is up to you though as is how much you spend, so do not let me dissuade you from shopping at Gander Mountain. However, if you are looking to save money - read on.

The thing was, just before I got into that forum discussion, I had just ordered six range-packs of seemingly the same ammunition (that the guy had recommended buying from Gander Mtn.) from Widener's at a total cost of $287.00, including shipping. Then there was this guy on the forum recommending Gander Mountain where the same ammo would have cost me $419.94 plus tax. Yes, I will have to pay an additional $10 transfer fee to my local FFL because the NY SAFE Act requires an ammo shipment to go through an FFL but for all I know Gander Mountain may charge the same. Even if they did not charge the transfer fee and if they did not charge tax, I saved $132.94 (without figuring in the transfer fee) or $122.94 (if the fee is considered). That is a big savings for what either is, or is essentially, the same ammo. I say it that way because what I purchased was made in Romania and the stuff at Gander Mountain could have been made in the Ukraine or in Romania as I understand; it did not specify in their ad at the time I checked it. Yet, the ammo is, as far as I am aware, essentially the same.

What I bought, according to my email receipt, was "Red Army Standard, Romanian, 7.62x39 123gr FMJ Ammunition" (which is steel cased). What Gander Mountain offered was "Red Army Standard Steel Case Rifle Ammo Range Pack, 7.62x39MM, 123-gr., FMJ" - all it seemed to be missing was the word 'Romanian'. Bear in mind, the prices I mentioned above were valid at the time I wrote this. I just could not fathom why anyone would pay that much more for the same ammo and I stuck my foot in my mouth by saying so in that online gun forum. The other forum member replied to my post saying that he had been unable to find a local FFL who was willing to do the necessary ammo transfer. I felt like a horse's ass when I read that and I decided to do some checking to see how he, or anyone else, in that situation could facilitate finding a local FFL dealer who would do the required ammo transfers here in the Extremely Socialist Repooblika of New Yorkistan.

What I found was called an FFL locator or finder. It was on the site at GunBroker.com at this address:

http://www.gunbroker.com/ffl/searchforffl.aspx

I typed in my own zip code and up popped about 10 FFLs within about 10 miles of my home. They were all shown on a map too. That was nice but when I had run a Google search of FFL Finder, a larger list other than just GunBroker came up so I tried another too.

That other one is at www.fflgundealers.net. On the FFLGunDealers site, I was able to enter my zip code and the radius within which  wanted the search conducted or I could have just clicked on the state name I wanted to search. I opted for the zip code method and selected 10 miles and a whopping 41 FFL holders came up within that distance from my location. There was no map but on this site all the dealers were listed in ascending order by distance from my zip code. You can also check the entire state by clicking on the state name of that site's home page. They list 2,233 FFLs in New York (I have no idea if that is all inclusive or up to date).

I figured that was just about good enough but still perused the list that came up on Google and found that some other sites list FFLs throughout the country. Now while all of that was well and good, I was actually looking for something a little different so I typed this into my browser bar: Ammo Transfer FFL Locator NY. That brought me to LuckyGunner and its chart of FFLs in NY willing to do ammo transfers at this address:

http://www.luckygunner.com/new-york-ammo-sales

I doubt the list is all inclusive, my guess is that the chart shows those NY FFLs on already file with LuckyGunner but as I said that is a guess. The thing about that is, you might decide to buy amo at a different online dealer who does not have the same FFLs on file. That is easily remedied by having your local FFL (who may have been on LuckyGunner's list or found at one of the FFL locaters) contact the dealer with his FFL info. I think the FFL has to fax or email a copy of his license to the dealer.

As for the chart of  FFLs shown at LuckyGunner, they list the FFLs by city first, then by name and address and also show how much they supposedly charge for an ammo transfer. The state has imposed a $10 limit per transfer (any sized order) but some dealers listed in that chart were shown with fees from zero to $10 to $25 and even up to $100 per transfer. Go figure but as you can see, if you locate a dealer who will do a transfer, do not assume they will only charge the $10 they are allowed to charge by law. Make sure to ask, ahead of time, what they charge for the transfer and if there is a limit to how much ammo can be charged per fee.

I would think that between the FFL finders at GunBroker and FFLGunDealer and the chart at LuckyGunner anyone in NY state, in a similar situation to the forum user who could not find a FFL willing to do ammo transfers, could probably easily find a local FFL willing to do the transfers by using these resources. Good luck to all of you who are still looking for a way to procure ammunition at reasonable prices from online dealers outside of NY. There is hope for you to buy less expensive ammo - and remember, if you vote there is also hope we can overcome this Draconian law known as the NY SAFE Act

For The Life Of Me - I Just Don't Get This Stance

It looks sexy as all get up (in her case anyway) but really, I may never understand why anyone shoots in a lean over backwards stance like that instead of leaning forward at the hips and with your back. Yeah, I understand that maybe if you are in a life or death situation, you will shoot in a stance like that just because conditions only allow it but I have also heard all of the excuses, like the gun is too big, or this is how I am comfortable, or this is how they did it in the military, or this is how I learned from my dad, or whatever. The thing is if she was shooting a 12 gauge like that she likely would wind up on her ass like this gal did:

Yeah, I know, the girl with the sub-gun had better leg position from the look of it (probably the only reason a 9mm sub-gun did not knock her over) but even if she would not have fallen shooting a shotgun like that - she damned sure would have hurt her shoulder and maybe her back.

So, why someone would shoot and train like that on the range is beyond me. Why anyone would instruct you to shoot in that position is even further beyond my realm of comprehension but it does happen. Just look at how this instructor sets up the shooter for her first shot, she is definitely leaning backward - not as much as the sub-gun gal but definitely backward:

You shoot like you train so, if you train like that you will almost always shoot like that and it will accomplish only a few things. It will put unnecessary strain on your back, hips and legs, it will allow the recoil to affect you worse than had you chosen a better stance, it likely will result in poorer shot placement than had you done it right and it may knock you on your arse. Still though, that gal shooting the sub-gun sure does look damned good in that position.

Take Action Against The Proposed M855 Ammo Ban

This has been going on for at least a couple of weeks now and I have seen some bloggers only begin to blog about the BATFE proposed M855 ammo ban yesterday or the day before. That got me a bit ticked off, then I thought - wow did I write about it already. In fact, yes I did, on February 13 and that was a relief to me. Folks, we need to be spreading the word and taking action now - we only have until March 16th to submit comments to BATFE.

Anyway, whether I blogged about it or not prior to today and whether or not others have spread the word as much as I think they should have been doing, I am going to once again let you know how you can help combat the proposed BATFE ban of 5.56x45mm M855 ammunition (which is by the way one of the most commonly purchased types of 5.56x45mm ammo).

What you can do is to contact the BATFE, your elected representatives, the vice president and president (and while I don't know about you I can say the last two are definitely not my elected representatives). To do so, use this link to the NRA/ILA:

https://www.nraila.org/take-action/write-your-lawmakers/stop-batfe/.

If you use the NRA/ILA link, they will send it to BATFE, the president, vice president, your senators and your congressional representative in the House. You fill in your info, hit enter and on the next page type or paste in a copy of your comments letter. You can write up your own comments in letter format or you can use a sample like this one:

Dear Sir or Madam:

I oppose an ATF ban on 5.56 M855 ball ammunition.

It has come to my attention that the ATF is seeking public input on a proposed ban on 5.56 M855 ball ammunition. I am contacting you today, to tell you I solidly oppose this ban.

Law-abiding American citizens have been using 5.56 ball ammunition for sporting purposes for decades, so this legislation appears to be a case of the government arriving at a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist.

Through this proposed ban, ATF disproportionately focuses on how criminals might use sporting ammunition in a handgun. Classifying criminals as a “consumer group” in the ATF’s white paper on this topic is also disturbing, as it further implies that the industry purposely sells firearms and ammunition to this element.

I urge the ATF to permanently drop the proposed ban of 5.56 M855 ball ammunition.

Sincerely,

Your Name, Title

Address
Phone
Email

If you prefer to write your own letter, the beolw link has a good number of talking points to mention in it:

https://www.nraila.org/articles/20150218/your-action-urgently-needed-to-prevent-batfe-from-banning-common-rifle-ammunition

I urge you to take action to defeat this ban and this outrageous attack on our liberties and rights.

All the best,
Glenn B

A Shortage of 7.62x39mm Ammo - I Think Not

I will readily admit there is a shortage of 5.56x45mm M855 ammunition right now because of the proposed BATFE changes that would eliminate that ammo from the commercial marketplace within the USA. (If you are unaware of that, you must have been in on Uranus for the last week.) Of course, there is also a shortage of reasonable priced 22LR and 22WMR but other ammunition is plentiful You would not believe what I just said though, about other ammo being plentiful, if you read some of the tings I have seen posted on gun forums lately. Some folks are gnashing their teeth and wailing about the so called shortage of, or out of stock status of, 7.62x39mm ammunition. I dare say, there is no such shortage, at least there was not within the last half our that I took to check with several online dealers to determine if 7.62x39mm ammunition was in short supply or not. I found out that it was not - that is not in short supply. There is plenty of it available and at reasonable prices considering the ammo market of the last year or so. Here is what I found:

Midway has TulAmmo 1K cases at about 27 cents per round, see:
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/3083371070/tulammo-ammunition-762x39mm-122-grain-full-metal-jacket-bi-metal-steel-case-berdan-primed?cm_vc=ProductFinding

Ammo Supply Warehouse has 1K cases of Wolf for about 24 cents per round, see: http://www.ammosupplywarehouse.com/product/158/Wolf-762x39-POLYFORMANCE-JHP-123-grn-1000-rdcase.html

Widner's has Red Army Standard, Romanian in cases of 1080 rounds at about 24 cents per round, see: https://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=100001245&dir=

Classic Firearms has Wolf going for about 25 cents per round per 1K case, see: https://www.classicfirearms.com/wolf-7-62x39hp-ammunition-1000-rd-quantity

Natchez Shooters' Supplies has 20 round boxes available at about 24 cents per round so 1K would cost $244.50, see: http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&prodID=TLUL076200

J&G Sales has a wide variety of 7.62x39mm available on this page: http://www.jgsales.com/ammo-for-rifles-c-12_41.html?sort=4d&page=1, I clicked on the first 8 or 9 on the list and every one of them was available. The best price was for Wolf FMJ (and Wolf HP) at about 23 cents per round.

It seems those folks, whom some say are buying all of the 7.62x39mmm ammo until out of stock, have never heard of J&G Sales - one of the better known online ammo dealers nor does it seem that they shop at any of the other dealers (all well known, I think) listed because if they did so they would have seen that 7.62x39mm is abundant and readily available at decent prices.

Some of the above dealers also have other varieties of steel cased 7.62x39mm in stock, I simply listed a single example from each. Note, I only checked on steel cased ammo, many dealers have the more expensive brass cased ammo in stock as well. Some dealers also have steel cased ammo with astronomical prices, I did not bother showing results for them. A quick check of
www.gunbot.net will show who has 7.62x39mm in stock. They have lots and lots more dealers listed at www.gunbot.net than the number of dealers I just checked. The bottom line though seems to be there is a plentiful supply of 7.62x39mm ammo available right now.

They Shoot Horses - Don't They?

I have heard of hunters shooting horses before because they mistook a horse for a Moose or a deer. Until today though, I never heard of them shooting horses thinking the horses were critters much smaller than a whitetail deer. Somehow though, an off duty Sheriff's Officer (who works as a lieutenant in the corrections division of the Ontario County SO in New York) and his hunting buddy wound up shooting two horses in two different locations on one property. Now you might think they must have been out deer hunting and somehow mistook the horse for deer but nope that is not it by a longshot. The fact is they were reported to have been coyote hunting!

I wonder how intoxicated you have to be to mistake a horse for a coyote and then do it again in a separate incident on earth you could mistake a horse for a coyote but these guys are either apparently not talking about that point or what they have said has not been released; so we may never know. As a matter of fact, the horse shooting took place last month and it reportedly took NY's Department of Environmental Conservation, the investigating agency, about three (3) weeks to release any information. Imagine that, it took three weeks for DEC law enforcement officers to divulge that one of the suspects in the case was a sheriff's officer.

The not so skilled hunters killed one horse and wounded the other. DEC reportedly has fined them $200 apiece, has revoked their hunting licenses for three years and is going to make them pay restitution for the dead horse and for the vet bills for the other horse. They reportedly gave out little other information to the press. According to the horses owner, they also did not ell him the names of the suspects - so how is it that he is supposed to seek damages from them and collect what DEC says they have to pay?

When the Ontario County Sheriff was questioned about this incident, he reportedly said he could not comment because this was a private matter. Everyone in law enforcement, who is involved in this somehow, seems surprisingly mum on this. Last time I recall though, a law enforcement officer violating the law (or even the hunting regulations) was a public issue since LEOs are civil servants (aka: public employees). In fact, any hunter violating the law (or hunting regulations) makes this a public issue and not a private one. Let's face it, if it was Elmer J. Fudd and his buddy who had shot the horses, this would have been headline news all over the state almost as soon as it had happened but it was a LEO and LE authorities seem to have suddenly clammed up.

I have to question what would have happened had this been me and my son. I am betting: we would have lost our hunting licenses for at least 5 years, we would have been fined closer to $1,000, we would have been arrested for reckless discharge of a firearm (or whatever a relative charge would be), we would have had our hunting guns confiscated, I would have had my pistol license revoked and we would have been obliged not only with restitution but community service and maybe even jail time. Of course, that is just my guess but then neither me or my son is a lieutenant in the Sheriff's department in the county where the offenses took place. Now, maybe I am getting that wrong, maybe NY is as lenient with out of control hunters as they are with out of control drug dealers and welfare cheats but I think this investigation smells as bad as a month long dead horse.

He Lived Long And He Prospered...

...and, as do we all, he finally breathed his last breathe but not before being one who wound up in he hearts of the many. Leonard Nimoy, the man who made Star Trek an out of this world experience with his portrayal of Mr. Spock, has died from COPD. He was 83. (source)

I knew him not only as Spock but also as Paris from Mission Impossible and from several other roles. I have never read his poetry but he was a published poet and photographer. He gave me a lot of good entertainment though and I will mourn his passing. Hopefully he is out there right now, following the words in the last stanza of the song The Highwayman, the part song by Johnny Cash. Maybe they are on a starship together - who knows.
