The Forster Field Headspace Gauge For My 7mm Mauser Finally Arrived..

...and I tried it out almost immediately. The bolt on my 1895 Chileno Mauser did not close on the field headspace gauge and that was good. Then again, Forster recommended I first remove the extractor from the bolt before checking the headspace and I had no clue how to do that. So, that time, I did it with the extractor in the bolt. I am a shooter and an instructor as far as shooting goes but have little clue as to gunsmithing except maybe as to Glock Armorer stuff so was at a loss as to how to properly remove the extractor.

The odd thing is that the video from Forster, on YouTube, does not tell you to remove the extractor before checking headspace but their written instructions, accompanying a gauge that you (or at least that I) bought from them, tells you to do exactly that. Here is

Their own directions differ markedly in as much as the video (which you could view before a purchase from Forster) does not tell you to remove the extractor BUT the written instructions from Forster do tell you to remove the extractor! Forster could have been clearer on that point or at least consistent.

So, I searched for more info and I wound up seeing this video from Midway USA which said to get the job done you first need to remove the bolt and then to remove the extractor from the bolt (in agreement with the paper instructions from Forster):



I was thus somewhat confused as to the right way to do it with those differing instructions but then again I am not totally clueless when it came to maintaining firearms. Thus, I figured that removing the bolt - as the paper instructions from Forster and the video from Midway USA recommended - was the way to go. I then tried it that way. I was quite happy to find it essentially had the same result as doing it with the extractor in the bolt or out of the bolt - the bolt would not close on the Field Headspace Gauge either way. As I said before - that is a good thing.

Now, I am going to admit some additional ignorance here: before I attempted to remove the extractor, I had no idea how to remove an extractor from the bolt of an 1895 Chileno Mauser. While the video from MidwayUSA made it look simple, I knew looks could be deceiving and thus I wanted a bit more info. So, I again turned to YouTube. I found another video that showed how to do it or at least explained it in more detail and it seemed like the guy explaining it was not a knucklehead. That was the below video. Now mind you, I have not watched it all yet, just enough for my initial purposes. I liked what I saw and tried it and it worked well to remove the extractor from the bolt:



All in all, I'm satisfied that I can take the 7mm 1895 Chileno Mauser to the range and not have to be concerned as to whether or not the headspace is correct. My guess is that I will have it at the local range this coming Wednesday at a meet of my local gun club. More about this boomer after the range trip.

I Don't Care If It Was Faked...

...as some people seem to suspect (as I have seen on some gun forums) - or if it is for real - either way - there is no way I am about to groin carry. Yep, that means another gun owner has seemingly shot himself in his own package - allegedly this time with a Glock 43 that was seated in an inside the pants holster above his groin. He bent over, gun went bang, he howled with pain but never even doubled over with it. Regardless, I decided long ago to never carry like that. Each time I learn about yet another person shortening his own Willie or ringing his own bells I feel justified in having made that decision. Damn - Appliances Are Expensive

Just ordered a dishwasher over the last week or so from Costco because the old one is kaput. That set us back about $685.00 including an extended warranty and tax. Then today, the wife tells me the washing machine is all fucked up. Has been for awhile now too I suppose and we had a guy come to do warranty service on it who claimed he reset the computer and all would be well and that there was nothing really wrong with it. Funny how nothing really wrong with it progressed from bad to worse in the last couple of days and wouldn't you know that the damned extended warranty on it expired just 5 days ago!

So there I went today looking at reviews for a new one. I wasted about 4 hours today (yep the laptop is old too and runs like shit under the current version of Windows) looking at reviews and online pricing. Finally decided on a GE model at the low to mid range in price and ordered it from Costco along with an extended warranty. At least I did not click on the complete order icon - had my wife do that to make her feel the guilt of spending just about another $740.00.

Right now every penny I will have made for my last few days of work and the few I will have made for a few upcoming scheduled days may just about pay for the dishwasher let alone the washing machine! Where in Hades the money is coming from for the washing machine - I have no clue! Then again, there is about $200-$300 in my piggy bank, I guess that can go toward it.

I imagine most folks would think that means no new guns for me for a spell. To that I  definitively can say: There will be no new guns for me that I will tell my wife about buying. I may yet go to the next Hessney Rod & Gun Auction and then sneak something into the house but only because right now - my very separate not-so-secret stash of cash for buying guns is in the black.

I Think Maybe I'd Stop Driving...

...if I had the same luck as a Canadian man who, about a decade ago, reportedly had a piece of rebar pierce his car's windshield, then his back seat and then go into his trunk. So, what is so bad about his luck? Well, history has kind of repeated itself but this time it was not a piece of rebar - it was an axe. Evidently an axe came flying through his windshield and struck him in the face causing a number of injuries but he is alive and not that badly injured considering...he could have been killed.

Right now, no one (except maybe the guy who threw it if that is what happened) including the injured man knows what happened or from where the axe came and wound up going through his windshield. It seems that a passerby saw the man's truck on the side of the road - he had somehow managed to pull off of the roadway -  and went to help. When she tapped on the window, Mr. Peddle woke up behind the wheel and saw his blood and the axe but reportedly cannot remember a thing about how it happened. More here and here.

You might think he is pretty luck not to have been injured by the rebar and not to have been killed by the axe but I am a believer in the old adage third time pays for all. Thus, I think it's time for him to give up driving and maybe live up to his namesake and sell his car. After all, the third time could be the clincher.

No Clowning Around

A Little Caesar's Pizza place employee reportedly was closing the shop for the night and after exiting the building allegedly was attacked with a post and then with scissors both wielded by 
someone wearing what has been reported as a clown mask. The employee reportedly was able to draw his firearm and shoot his alleged assailant killing him. No charges have been filed against the pizza place worker (and let's hope that stays the case). More at the link below, including a photo of the so called clown mask and folks let me just say it looked more like a demon than a clown to me, see more at the source.

Spent A Little Time At The Range Today...

...since I figured that exercising my liberties relative to our rights under the 2nd Amendment would be a good way to honor those who have fallen protecting those rights & liberties.

You have heard it before, I am The Great Procrastinator  but I did not wait all that long before firing the Glock 21 I got earlier this month. In other words, I finally got around to shooting it for the first time today. Darn it though, I forgot to buy extra mags for it and remembered that only today when loading mags at home prior to getting to the range. Anyway, I ordered two extra mags for it today from GunMagWarehouse.com. Had a good experience with them for some mags I purchased for my Glock 30 couple or so months ago. They had a decent price and shipping was pretty decent to. Wish I could have afforded at least two more but they will be bought sooner or later - especially now that I know the G21 is a shooter and thus a keeper.

As for my range trip, I only shot at the 7, 5 and 3 yard lines but that was enough to convince me that this Glock 21 is inherently more accurate than many folks skill levels, including my own, would be when shooting with it. Besides its accuracy, I basically wanted to see if it functioned properly and it fed, fired, extracted and ejected without a hitch. Granted, I only fired about 150 rounds through it but that was enough for today and sufficient to convince me it's a keeper. The elderly gentleman (yes even elderly compared to me and I am ancient) who sold it to me told me he had fired only 50 rounds through it and I believe him. Besides being very clean when I bought it from him, it had some of the copper colored lube on the slide that Glock pistols come with from the factory; then today, there was the fact that it was very difficult to load that last tenth round (NY mag restriction is 10 rounds) into each of the two mags I have for it and that was when using the Glock loading tool. These two mags obviously have not been loaded many times before today. I am pretty sure though, they will be getting loaded with at least a bit more frequency now that I have reason to like my G21.

Sadly, I don't shoot as good as I once did but my shooting with the G21 was none too shabby.

I also shot the Glock 30 again today. Put about 100 rounds through it and shot much the same with it as I did on my last shoot. I like it a lot and it shoots just fine but I am still getting malfunctions whereby a round does not load properly (usually the last round or next to last one) and had an instance today of the slide locking open with a round still in the mag. The mag was not partially fed, so the slide did not get stuck on the cartridge. Thus, I have no clue how or why the slide locked open. I have to look the gun over once again and also need to mark the mags and pay closer attention to determine if it is happening with one or more mags that may be faulty. The mags are my main culprits but of course, it could be shooter error too. Yet, since this did not happen with the G21 - I am guessing it is due to one or more of the mags. It's happening with much less frequency now but still two malfunctions out of around a hundred rounds fired are too many. and that requires more checking to see what is causing the problem.

All in all though, I had a good time at the range and once again, I am a happy shootist!

Lest We Forget...

...take some time today to think about, to remember, to honor and memorialize America's fallen military personnel who fell in battle for our great nation. After all, the great nation of which I speak is our country and our country is made up of us - it is us and we are it - and without their sacrifice it would be a very different land in which we live.

Allow me to somberly wish you a Happy Memorial Day but give me a moment before you scold me to tell me today is not a day to be happy. Should you wish anyone a Happy Memorial Day today, be solemn in mood, as I am, when you do so. Bear in mind, as do I, that while today is a day to remember and honor those of our military who fell honorably in battle - it is also a day on which we can give them thanks and be truly but respectfully happy that we live in the greatest nation on earth because of them and their sacrifice. Never forget though that it is only through their sacrifice that we are what we are and live as we live today.

I've Been Sitting Here...

...at my desk, downloading firearms manuals from the Internet. Been at it for well over two hours now, some download in the wink of an eye but others are taking up to a couple of minutes or longer - thankfully though most don't take that long. My source for them is a list of PDF files that someone got off of Steve's page 7B (his firearms manuals page). At the current time (as I write this blogpost)  - you no longer can access those files by going to Steve's Pages. Luckily someone else downloaded them and linked to them or somehow just linked to them and his links are still active through a backdoor to the files at Steve's Page 7B. The site I am downloading them from is to be found here. Hmm, maybe I should spell out the link just in case:

So far, I have downloaded 128 files and I am only into the Bs - up to the many Browning firearms that are on the list. While there are plenty of files left to download from the link at that page - sadly it only gets you as far as a few J.C. Higgins guns. Now, if you go to that site and click on manuals you (or at least I) cannot download any of the files and he has many more listed there much like on the original Steve's Page 7B. Why they will not download is beyond me but a pop-up appears asking for user name and password and inputting the user name and password they tell you to use does not work (as I said, at least for me). So I am left with potentially being able to download A through some of J and am still at it. Heck, once I quit tonight, I'll probably be at it tomorrow for at least another few to several hours. These files definitely are worth the time and effort to download.

My Colt Detective Special...

...is indeed a first issue judging by the date, December 5, 1932, that Colt told me it shipped from the factory. Heck, my mother, may she rest in peace, was not quite yet 8 years old on that date but would turn 8 on Christmas day that year. In other words, it was a pretty long time ago when this gun made its first public appearance.

According to the authentication letter I received from Colt, my Detective Special was shipped to a gentleman by the name of Simon Atlas in Washington, DC on that date. I will admit, I was a little disappointed but not because I ever really expected it to come back as having been originally owned by Elliot Ness; it's just that one can hope. Man oh man, Elliot Ness as the first owner - now that would have been excellent news. As it stands now though, I am happy to know it is a first issue and am left curiously wondering just who exactly was Simon Atlas.

Of course, I initiated Google and other searches for Simon Atlas - seeking anyone with that name from around that era (the Dirty Thirties) in the DC area. The only thing that came back that in any way possibly may be related to the original owner of the gun was that there is a Jewish organization called Simon Atlas AZA#126 that was founded in Washington, DC in 1930 - right name - right era. I have sent them an inquiry via a Facebook message asking for some historical information on their namesake. I also found recent references to Simon "Si" Atlas in relation to Maccabi USA. I sent them an inquiry and asked that they forward my inquiry to Mr. Atlas, in the hope that maybe the original owner of my Colt DS was a relative of his; he is also from the area around DC. I am simply curious to find out just who was Simon Atlas - the original owner of this Colt Detective Special.

Other than that, maybe I should frame the letter to keep it safe and looking good in the event I ever want to sell the revolver.

Ribs - Barbecued & Broken

Picked up a rack of BBQ'd ribs at Costco two days ago. Had some last night - man are they delicious. Pretty plain, maybe a bit of spice but not overpowering. Going to have a few more later today.

Hopefully eating ribs will help mend my ribs. I am pretty certain, like 99.9% sure, that at least one of mine is broken. Have not been to the doc for it but I have broken ribs before and am very sure one is busted now - painful movement with snapping noises coming from one rib bone depending on what I am doing. Taking a deep breath or coughing is very painful. Tender to the touch. Wake up in middle of the night in pain when I roll over and other such stuff.

I had wanted to see my regular yesterday doc but she is on vacation. So, I went to see a doc yesterday at an urgent care center. When I told them not to scan my ID because I have been victim of ID theft a few times, the manager came out and she told me they could not see me if my ID was not scanned as per their policy. Been going there for years, never scanned my ID before to my knowledge. Told em I would go elsewhere. Fuck em. I will find another place if it does not start feeling better sooner than later or if gets any worse.

You will note I did not say how it happened. All I will say is make sure to depress the safety bar on the lawn mower handle before pulling hard on the cord to start it. Never before knew a lawn mower could jump a few feet.

I ordered a 5 round mag for my CZ527 from www.GRABAGUN.com last week on the 16th of the month and it arrived yesterday. Considering that they had the lowest cost, with shipping, of anyone I could find who had that magazine in stock that was excellent. The only possible drawback was that the mag was shipped in a bubble wrap type envelope and the plastic package for the mag was crushed right where the follower sticks out of the mag body. Does not look damaged and hoping it is not - will give it a test later today once I am done with garden chores.

Those chores by the way are a bit tougher with what I figure is at least one broken rib.

White Trash Dons A Suit

When you think of white trash you may think of the south or midwest but few people probably think of NY state. Believe me, NY has its fair share of them. Take for example the case of the 30 year old son who has been fighting  eviction from his parents home. He just lost his case in court but reportedly vows to appeal; more at the source. Despite his wearing a suit in court, I don't think you can't get much trashier than refusing to grow up and leave your parents home.

Unexpected Gun Control - Inflation...

...is shooting down my ability to buy guns or a least the guns I want as often as I would like. I would have thought that the law of supply and demand would have meant that the prices of guns would have dropped under President Trump as ammo has done. Yet, that seems not to be the case, in fact from what I have seen, while ammo prices have dropped markedly now that Obama is out of office and less folks seem to be panic buy (thus increasing availability of ammo) at least some gun prices have gone up.

Take for example a pistol I bought on Halloween 2016, just over 1.5 years ago. The price was $369.99 plus $9.99 for shipping or $379.98 total. I had been considering giving it to my son and transferring it to his FFL when I drove down there. Did not happen as NY State gun laws are so convoluted I am not certain if that would be legal or not. I would have shipped it but since UPS requires next da air for handguns, the cost of shipping and transfer fees making that idea ridiculous: shipping at approximately $107; FFL in NY $50; county PD to remove from license $10; FFL in AR $25 for a total of $192!

So, I thought of buying him one or at least giving him a new one minus what 'he' would have had to pay for shipping and transfer fees (cause I sure was not about to pay for that) of the one I already own. Anyway, the cost of a new Rock Island Armory 'Rock Standard FS -  45ACP M1911-A1 FS Tac - 51431' (their nomenclature for the pistol) from the exact same place where I got it, for $369.99 plus $9.99 shipping, is now selling it for $479.99 plus that same $9.99 shipping charge or a total of $489.98. Wow that is a $110 increase or about 22% more in price! While shipping fees seem not to have been affected by inflation - the gun price has skyrocketed. Of course, I realize that dealers change their prices now and then and that another dealer might have a much better price. So, I took a look over at https://gun.deals; more specifically at this page: https://gun.deals/search/apachesolr_search/Rock%20Island%20Armory%2051431.

The lowest price shown, at various gun dealers, was one for $419.99 but that was a bit deceiving. When I went to the site with that price, they were offered at that price  but only if you bought two. If you bought just one, the price went up by $10 to $429.99. Now that did not seem all that bad until I saw that shipping to my area would be an additional $30.96 for a new total of $460.95. That's a $80.97 raise in price. Still better than the current price at the place I originally got mine but also still much more expensive than the one I got just over a year and a half ago.

While I cannot say, and do not believe for a moment, that this is happening with all guns - I have noticed a similar phenomenon with some other firearms as well. Prices just seem to be going up, up and away. That's got me wondering - is it just the few guns I have wanted lately that seem to be going up in price? I checked on the prices of another gun I had bought recently. The current lowest price I could find, using that same website, for a Marlin 1895 GBL was $599.90. I picked one up for $513.97 back in July 2017 - a mere 10 months ago. I don't know what you think but I think a price increase of $85.93 in less than a year, for a $514 item, is pretty friggin high being it is an almost 17% increase. My pension has certainly not increased anywhere nearly as much, in total, in the 6.5 years I have been retired.


Oh well, I suppose it is a good reason to keep working part time in retirement since you can rest assured I will not allow it to stop me from exercising my RKBA.
