No Blogging Yesterday...
...because I was just too damned busy trying to make some money by running a garage sale. Actually it was a driveway sale, I wasn't letting anyone into my garage. On Friday, I pulled out a load of junk of stuff that I and other family members were not using any longer, cleaned off whatever of it that needed cleaning, put an ad on both Craig's List and Backpage and made a few signs that I hung on telephone poles in the neighborhood. I also remembered to go to the bank to get plenty of fives and ones for change. Then, in the evening, I started putting price stickers on most of it. Once that was done, I cracked open a couple of beers and a bottle of 12 year old single malt Knappogue Castle Irish whiskey (a present from my brother-in-law the younger) and enjoyed it with my son and one of his friends (the other two of his friends there when I cracked it open were too pussy

I took the $80 from my tortoise sale and put that in my pocket. Then I took the remaining $66, divided it by three and gave $22 each to my daughter, daughter and son. At the least they can buy a few gallons of gas for their cars although I would bet my son spent his while out getting sloshed last night. I spent around $140 on supplies at a reptile show today where I was helping to man the Long Island Herpetological Society's table. Well, I really only made $100 in purchases, the other $40 was a donation I made to the society. The $80 for the tortoise helped out considerably with today's outward cash flow; still though, I wish I had moved sold
A final thing about the sale yesterday - after it was over, I put away the good things and then smashed up all the junk and threw it in the garbage; I did not want anyone who attended the sale (and who bought nothing) coming by and finding anything worth taking in my trash. That just made me think, I have to put that trash out tonight and also have to go take down the four signs we put up before I get a summons for them. Gotta go, later 4 U.

Some Classical Music - Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (Mozart Never Envisioned This)
Yes folks, I am going classical but only up to a point. You can bet that while Mozart maybe would have liked to have seen this, it never even crossed his mind in his wildest dreams. Then again, maybe it did and maybe that is why he wrote such excellent music.

Time For a Garage Sale
Or maybe I should call it a yard/lawn sale or better still a driveway sale because I sure as hell am not letting anyone walk around in my garage or my yard. What I have in my garage is my business and what little grass I have on my front lawn and the flowers I have in my yard need all the help they can get and that includes keeping peoples' clod-hoppers off of them. So it will be restricted to my driveway.
I am going to try to pull it off tomorrow and have advertised on Craig's List and Backpage. So far, it seems that the weather will cooperate. What I need to do, is finish writing this blog post, get off my old arse, pile everything outside on my patio (so it will be less work to set-up tomorrow). I also have to take photos of some of the items and put a new posting on both Craig's List and Backpage with pics. Finally, I'll need to make up some signs to staple to local telephone poles. I had one of these sales before and was told by customers that if I had put up signs locally, I likely would have gotten more business because they drive around looking for them. So, I am going to give that a try. Then again, nothing will get done if I don't get going; so - later 4 U.

I Don't Know About You Guys And Your Level of Disaster Preparedness...
...but I am doing some preparation for a possible outbreak of Ebola. I really am not all that worried about it but am taking precautions nonetheless especially in light of the cavalier attitude of some health care officials and some politicians (like our president Barry the bumbler) in regard to Ebola, its potential to spread and their already apparent failure to contain it.
We already are somewhat prepared for an emergency here at our house. We probably have enough extra food to last us at least a few weeks. If you wonder why just think of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. We also have other emergency supplies like some first aid stuff, batteries, candles, (don't forget waterproof matches), a camping stove and fuel. I also have gas masks for everyone in the immediate family. Just lately, I have made a few more purchases and plan to make additional ones of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other survival necessities for SHTF (shit hits the fan)situations or heaven forbid for TEOTWAWKI. Mostly though it is all just precautionary I am not really worried that any of it will ever be needed. Still, it is a comforting feeling to know we are somewhat ready - just in case. Oh yeah, don't let me forget, we have guns and ammo too, they are to protect us while we protect our supplies (because having our supplies for us, and not stolen from us, could mean whether we live or die).
Like I said, I have made some recent purchases of PPE. Yesterday, I ordered half a dozen hazmat suits. They can be used as disposable or reused as you want. They are fairly inexpensive if you buy them at the right place. I have seen the same suits that I just ordered going for as high as almost $25 each (and you had to buy a case of a dozen for that price) but I ordered them from a reputable dealer for about $11 each and did not have to buy a whole case of them. The places offering them at the higher prices seem like fly by night websites or maybe just are run by unscrupulous dealers trying to make more during a potential pending crisis that may promote panic buying. In fact, the suits can be had at even less than what I paid but they were not in stock for immediate shipment and or I had never heard of the dealer before so I avoided buying those. Also, many places only sell them in bulk (12 to 25 to a carton), I was able to purchase individual suits.
As for the suits themselves, the ones I ordered are level B/C. They are good for use against infectious diseases, light chemical spills and so forth. They each have elasticized wrists and hood, integral boots/socks and taped seams (very important when considering use to defeat spread of infection). They are bright yellow and while I dislike them being bright yellow all I can say is 'oh well, we will look like rays of sunshine if the SHTF'. I also ordered several pairs of nitrile gloves that are 15 mil thick, they were one of the thicker general use gloves out there. There are much heavier/thicker ones but I wanted gloves I can feel through and with which I can operate a certain type of machine that requires my index finger fitting inside of a certain type of guard and onto a slightly curved lever of sorts. We already have a full box of nitrile exam gloves and they are okay for common everyday contact with other people and objects (or as I usually use them for cleaning my reptile tanks and firearms cleaning).
Finally, I ordered some gas mask filters from another source than the gloves and coveralls. Man oh man - they are expensive for brand new ones and very hard to find. Luckily, I found a reputable (as far as I know from past dealings) dealer who has Swedish milsurp filters that were made in 2002 and have a 20 year shelf life and are said to still be inside of vacuum sealed packages. If the vacuum seal has not failed that is good enough for me and they were affordable. I will try to order current manufacture US made (and more expensive) filters when I can but for right now these will have to do. I ordered everything but the filters from the same source and did that yesterday. This morning, I received an email saying my order has shipped for the gloves and hazmat suits. I am still waiting for a shipping confirmation on the filters.

The 3M mask models I am considering, model 8577 and model 8576 are more expensive by far than the ones I normally use but I figure the added expense may be worth it considering the potential for a pandemic in our near future. They offer the P95 particulate rating instead of N95 as does model 8210. The main difference between the N95 and P95 rated masks is that the N95 does not offer resistance to oils and the P95 is supposedly strongly oil resistant - source CDC web pages reference then NIOSH N95 and the NIOSH P95 particulate filtering respirators. In addition the models 8576 and 8577 offer resistance to either organic or acid vapors depending on which model. I like the idea of a layer of carbon because I know it has purification properties that can remove toxins from the air you are breathing.

The 3M masks can be used for such chores as sanding, grinding, scraping paint, rust removal, cleaning out a sewer line, or cleaning out the garage.
For example: I used my last two 3M model 8210 masks just a couple of days ago cleaning out the shed in my backyard. Normally, I would not do so (that is both not clean the shed or wear a mask if I were to do so) but my wife told me she saw that a bag of grass seed had been torn open and the seeds were all over the place. She suspected mice, she was right. I took one look and saw about 500 (or more) mouse turds mixed in with the seeds in about 1/2 the shed. I decided to go in and take everything out, and I mean everything, and give it a decent cleaning and hosing off and also to get rid of the mice. The only clue I had as to the type of mice was that it could have been any of the indigenous species here in NY. I figured house mice or maybe field mice.
Since it is a known fact that certain species of mice on Long Island carry and spread the hantavirus, and that it has been transmitted to humans on LI who probably got it sweeping out their garages (that variety is called the New York Hantavirus), I decided to take precautions. After all, it is pretty easy to catch hantavirus through airborne transmission when particles of it in rodent urine or droppings are stirred up into the air while sweeping/cleaning. So, I donned nitrile gloves and a 3M model 8210 mask and equipped myself with a spray bottle of chlorine bleach based cleaner (I sprayed everything almost before touching it or sweeping it), a broom, a dust pan and some trash bags. I am guessing that there had to have been at least a quarter pound of mouse crap in there or in other words an awful lot of mouse droppings and that means more than the 500 I first estimated. After I was done, I took off the PPE and disposed of it. Then, I scrubbed myself off as good as I could and washed all the clothing I had been wearing. I hope I did not wind up breathing in anything from their crap.
It wound up that the mice were of the species Mus musculus otherwise known as the House Mouse and I probably did not need to worry about hantavirus because I am pretty sure that house mice are not vectors for the hantavirus. Do you think though that I went overboard and should not have taken precautions just in case! Had she escaped to wherever, like maybe into my house, she would have popped them out and they would have been eating and ruining our stored food and shitting all over our home. As for the other one of the pair, he escaped, I guess he took off for safer climes while I was cleaning and had the doors of the shed open.
Anyway, it winds up that I need to replace my dust mask supply since I have run out after the mousecapade. The only question about it is which masks do I want to use to resupply my now zero stock of them. Should I go with the tried and trusted model 8210 or the more expensive models with the carbon layer. Right now I am edging toward the 8210. After all, if a manufacturing plant near my home goes up in an explosion and spews toxic fumes or vapors, we already have gas masks for something like that.

There are constant threats of terrorist attacks and have been several failed attempts in our country in recent years and some successful ones not too long ago. There have been numerous natural and man made disasters and even police action induced situations (whether justified or not - I am not finding fault with the police at this moment) that have led to rioting, looting and curfews. I don't want to find myself suddenly realizing that we need food for supper the same night that there is rioting going on near our home or when the local supermarket is being looted by opportunistic savages. I certainly do not want or need too fight my way into a supermarket and then back out and toward home only to wind up maybe being arrested by the police for suspected looting or worse yet because I had to shoot someone in self defense while out trying to buy dinner. I would rather stay at home and open some cans of green beans, corn and spam.
Again, my advice to you - think about it. Which do you think is better, being fairly well prepared or being unprepared. I think it is a whole lot better to prepare for the worst now and never need to utilize any of my preparations than to not prepare and then suddenly find myself lacking in all regards. As for you, you need to figure that out for yourself cause you sure aren't going to be allowed to come to my house to freeload!

Where Is Eric Frein? - A Must Read
I found the following piece, 'Where is Eric Frein?' on Facebook. It is a work that asks some tough questions of the government and also one that should get you wondering and thinking about exactly what has been going on with our government in general, and law enforcement in particular, over the past decade or three (I don't think it references a timeline but I can assure you what is discussed has been happening for at least that long). Read it and think about it and prepare for the outright tyrannical oppression that has been forming and is almost sure to overtake our way of life unless We The People do something to stop it.

We need to reform the government (our chance is nigh, elections are forthcoming) to be able to reclaim our rights and exercise our liberties as we see fit and not as the government sees fit to restrict and we need to do it before it is too late. How can we do it? I believe that we justifiably can use whatever means are necessary to topple the unlawful, Constitution disregarding, tyranny under which we now live. There are three basic ways to do it and so far we have used two of the three but let me point out that so far standing on the soap box has failed, we may still be able to do it by way of the ballot box but time is running out for that option too. If we cannot accomplish the defeat of tyranny from the soap box or at the ballot box that leaves only one option. That one is a box I always have hoped would never have to be opened in opposition to our own government but if it comes to it then so be it to defeat unlawful tyranny while protecting our rights, our liberties, the Constitution of the United States Of America and our Constitutional Republic.

I honestly didn't think that I'd be talking about this guy again, but at what point do you say, "enough". I'm beginning to think there is something else going on here because, who does this?
I don't want to sound insensitive or disrespectful of an officer's death but seriously, at what point in time should we start asking questions? Let's look at this from an unbiased perspe...ctive...
Do multiple law enforcement agencies regularly assemble for a manhunt when a citizen OTHER than another LEO is murdered? No, they do not.
Does the State typically spend in excess of $1 million dollars per week for weeks on end searching for the murderer of a regular citizen?
At the expense of the taxpayers, would law enforcement agencies bring in specialized equipment and trained officers of multiple agencies, including the FBI, and militarized swat units from OTHER municipalities for just any murder investigation? Nope, nope.
Is it alright to burden the citizenry with endless police presence, countless road blocks, hundreds of warrantless searches, curtailing of daily activities (like hunting season in 7 counties), imposing of curfews, door to door interrogations, and NOW postponement of all Halloween festivities?
For the purpose of capturing the murderer of a single person who happened to be a state trooper...
So, why are they doing this? Seriously, WHAT is it that makes this one particular officer, who was tragically gunned down by a random crazy person, entitled to the exhaustive efforts that are being used to capture his killer?
I don't know about you, but I'm going to say it....
This isn't about just catching a killer, there has got to be something more. It's almost like theater for a long term martial law drill...

I Would Hope It's True But I Fear The Con Of The Millennium Is In The Making
A Chinese company, Sihuan Pharmaceutical Holdings Group Ltd, is reportedly claiming to have created a drug that cures Ebola. They are trying to fast-track it though China's pharmaceutical drug approval process for commercial use but it reportedly has already been approved for use by China's military. (Source.)
Who knows, maybe they have found a cure but I have been around the block a few times and have seen the Chinese make bold but empty claims before about scientific findings and have also seen them screw the world more than once. I fear this to be nothing more than a con by which they will try to get investors (like other countries) to pay big bucks for what they claim is an Ebola cure only for those countries to find out they wasted their money and put lives in jeopardy by accepting the claims of the Chinese that this stuff works. Or maybe even worse, maybe if it spreads, they will give it out for free knowing it is useless and as other nations use it and their people die the Chinese will advance whatever evil agenda they have in the making. Of course anything is possible though, maybe China has suddenly become a genuinely munificent nation and is willing to give it to the world for free to save humanity (should it come to that bad of an outbreak). If so, let's hope that they really have hit upon a cure.

The Sorely Obvious Answer Is: No!
That question was the headline of a Fox news article: "Can All USS Hospitals Safely Treat Ebola?" I think the answer should have been obvious to you long before you even read the article and that answer is a resounding - No!
I think the answer was obvious but I also think that no US hospital can safely treat every case of Ebola. The odds are just against it as can be seen by the two Ebola cases in Dallas already. One was a botched diagnosis that led to an exam and release of the patient. Then, once he was finally admitted and treated for Ebola, what happened but that a nurse who treated him came down with Ebola too. Of course they want to blame it on the nurse, or at least the head of the CDC wants to do so (source), but I blame it on pompous arsehats like him who have that certain affliction that doctors get. You know it don't you? It is what is commonly referred to as he God Syndrome - the one by which doctors think they are infallible and that it is anyone else's fault but their own if a patient succumbs or if a disease spreads.
They may get lucky and beat Ebola but folks, I fear we are in for a bad time with it before it is over and that is especially true as long as we have doctors who know it all but nurses (by the doctors' thinking) who do not. One has to wonder, if the docs know it all, then whose fault is it that they have not properly trained the nurses!

So What Did I Miss Blogging About - How About The Potential World Record Boner
Besides not blogging for about a week, the past week also had me not paying much attention to the news. Still though, I would have thought that I would have noticed this one because of its potential for being a world record. Reportedly, a 23 year old man in England awoke with what is typical for men in good health - a hard-on. It is usually a sign that things are good for the man both mentally and physically; however, in this case, after several hours of having a boner, the guy figured something was wrong and told his buddy who in essence fell to the floor in laughter. Soon though, they realized it was not a laughing matter. He was treated, some 17 hours later, by doctors who reportedly drew two pints of blood from his throbbing member and also injected it with with erection reducing medications some 24 times. Can you say ouch; the guy said it was pain that was a 10 out of 10. (source)
I can think of other ways I would have tried to tame it other than the ice bath he reportedly tried. A warm water bath to open the flow instead of constricting it with ice comes to mind as does a more pleasurable method involving a willing female. If I had one, I somehow do not think I would have necessarily asked my male roommate for help.
Anyway, I am thinking that a 17 hour boner may well get itself into the Guinness World Records as the longest maintained (time-wise)

Yeah, yeah, yeah - I Know I Haven't Blogged In About A Week
Had nothing last Wednesday since I was getting sick of blogging about Ebola, the Muslims trying to conquer the world (and apparently succeeding for now), U.S. Politics and the hypocrisy of it all, guns (that I can't spare the ammo to shoot much), ammo prices that are still sky high and ammo that is still scarce (no doubt in my mind because of government purchase contracts), the government over taxing us, the tyranny of local, county, state and federal governments, the militarization of police and whatever else it is that I have blogged about in recent months.
I also had to work on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and was just too pooped when I got home to bother with blogging. On Saturday I think I did nothing except some going though of family photo albums and yesterday I went upstate with my son to scout deer and kill busy-tailed rats. As for that last, he got in a shot at one and saw it fall out of the tree like a ton of bricks but then was not sure which tree (yeah he was pretty sure, as in almost certain, but not quite 100% sure which tree). We searched for it for over half an hour and could not find it nor any blood. He looked more after that too, no luck though. I figure he winged it and it got up and took off for parts unknown. Oh well, at least he got off a shot. He did find a ringneck snake and a red back salamander though. It was only in the low 60s but they were out regardless. Nice looking ringneck snake, good size, going into a shed from the look of it. He checked it out and let it go in the exact spot he found it. Never even picked up the salamander, just gave it a good looking over. He always has been lucky at finding herps, if only some of that would rub off this hunting season for deer all will be well.
Anyway, no sign of deer except some trails. I mean no spoor, no rubs, no hair, no nothing for the most part. Spoke to a bird hunter later on, down where our car was parked, and he said that that particular area was heavily hunted and here were not many deer. I concur after the scant sign we did find (the deer trails). He gave us some clues as to better local spots an I will check them out in the coming weeks.

Ebola - It Only Seems To Get Worse (or we are in deep - deep - deep shit)
Yes folks, here I am again with more doom and gloom about Ebola. by now, you should know that a nurse has contracted the disease in Spain. It is believed that she caught it from a priest who had been brought to Spain from Sierra Leone to treat his case of Ebola. The thing is that there is a conundrum over how she could have contracted the disease from the priest since each of the two times she had contact with him, she was reportedly wearing a hazmat suit (source). If that is correct, several questions immediately come to mind and they need to be answered without delay because the lives of everyone treating Ebola patients could well depend on the answers. Some of those questions are:
If she was protected by a hazmat suit, each time she came in contact with the Ebola patient, how did she get Ebola?
Did the hazmat suit fail or was it flawed?
Are certain hazmat suits ineffective or less effective than others against Ebola and did she wear that type?
Did she don the suit correctly or incorrectly and thus cause a breach in the protection it offered?
Did she contract the disease from touching the suit as she put it on because it had been used previously and was not decontaminated properly?
Did she get it when being decontaminated, after contact with the patient (after the suit was cleaned and then as she took off the suit that maybe was not cleaned properly)?
If none of the above are found to be the reason she became infected then we must ask tougher questions:
Has Ebola mutated to be able to penetrate hazmat suits?
Did she purposefully expose herself by compromising the hazmat suit?
Did she unknowingly come in contact with someone else, in Spain, who also had Ebola?
As far fetched as the last three questions may seem, if it is determined that the hazmat suit was worn properly, that it was not faulty and that the decontamination was effective - then you must ask them too.
Several folks have been quarantined because she contracted the illness. They include her husband. Sadly, Spanish authorities have decided to kill their dog, over the objections of the nurse and her husband, and will incinerate its carcass (source). I think that quite foolish because were they to medically observe that dog under quarantine they might learn something that leads to a vaccine, a cure or a preventive measure.
Then I remember that these are governments at work and I think we are frigging doomed.

Off To A Running (and walking) Start
I restarted my exercise program yesterday, went to the gym last night and did 6.5 miles on the treadmill. I alternated between running and walking a quarter of a mile for 5.5 miles, then walked the remainder at a small incline. Not too sure if I was up for quite that much, my hips are just about screaming right now. That though has been par for the course for years when I walk or run. Also, my knees are aching and so are my ankles, feet and calves too, along with some of the upper parts as well.
That all will work its way out somewhat as each exercise session passes or so has been my past experience although the hips and legs and some other areas around joints have been and likely will remain a problem. They have been hurting after any exercise ever since a few docs first suspected I had Lyme disease about 25 years ago. Never diagnosed it back then, always said the test results were inconclusive. Years later I was twice diagnosed with it. Guess the hips will never again be very happy campers. Lately though, I have been paying more attention to how the pain comes on and how my legs in total are effected, I wonder if the pain may be more due to tendon problems as it seems more that than pain deep in the joints. I wonder if taking Levaquin many years ago is what led to most of the problems. I digress.
Anyway, the exercise program is back in action - or should I say - I am back in action. I suppose that is much better for me than being a couch potato. Plan to hit the treadmill again tomorrow - figuring on three to four das per week for now BUT I may try gain tonight if the hips are not too sore.

The Diet Begins
I had 3 pair of pants, for work, delivered to me last week. Tried them on at the end of the week, all in my size or at the size I wore for the past several years. They did not fit. Now that is perplexing because even when I weighed more than I do currently, that size pants fit. These new ones sure do not fit now, although I will say my old pants still fit and they are both in the same sized waist. I measured the pants, they are indeed 36 waist but when I tried to close them they were about 4 to 6 inches shy of comfortable and at least 2 -3 inches shy of closing at all. I will readily admit some of my old pants are tight but they close all the way pretty easily an I can breath, move and wear them all day comfortably. These new ones just won't even close. I will also readily admit that I have been sucking in junk food like a vacuum cleaner set on high as of late (past few months at least) and I have been laying on the couch watching TV when I do most of it, often right before hitting the hay for the night. That's not good for anything but my girth expanding.
What this means is that I have gained weight and I need to diet and hit the gym. So far - a whole day - the diet has been somewhat successful. I have not eaten one bit of junk food loaded with sugary or other carbs. No cookies, pretzels, cakes, ice cream, cheesy crackers (Goldfish are a favorite), no peanut butter and raspberry jam sandwiches (although once I am off pure junk they will be okay once or twice per week), no potato or corn chips, no candy, no bread smeared with honey, and so on. Now mind you, I am not and will not be eating only celery and carrots. In fact, I kind of shy away from that stuff even when I diet. What I will be doing is a sort of modified Atkins' Diet of my own making. So, Ill be cutting out lots of carbs but nowhere near all of them although sugary ones will be just about completely out of the question for me.
In fact, you might think I would be overdoing it if you saw what I will be eating such as: pizza, bagels, toast with butter, baked potatoes with butter, buttered corn and so forth. I'll also be eating a lot of salad and meat and probably a bit more of other vegetables and fruit too. For snacks, I'll be eating things like: peanuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, bacon, salami, fruit (limited mostly to bananas, pineapple, apples and berries, citrus fruit - all just out of preference), bacon, chicken wings, bacon, OJ and whatever else that strikes my fancy that is pretty low carb. I'll eat just about anything for my regular meals eating either 3 or 4 a day but making sure to limit carb intake with meals to maybe one slice of bread per meal (maybe one per day for the first few weeks). On the sad side, I will be cutting out beer. Now, that does not mean I will cut out alcohol. I'll be able to drink wine and booze when I want - maybe twice or three times per week - just no beer - at least not for a couple to few weeks. I will miss my beers and ales - that is for sure.
I can eat almost any crappy food out there, short of sweets and super-heavy carb junk foods, and lose weight. I have proven that in the past. Working out is going to help with that - but all I am planning is walking on the treadmill at a decent incline. I have done it before and I can do it again. I have a bit of extra incentive to get this done besides getting down myself to a waistline where size 36 or maybe even a 34" pants from any maker readily fit me again. That added incentive is lowering my blood sugar which has been high seemingly for well over a few years now almost any time it is tested. It's not high enough for me to be diabetic but is getting close. After what I have been through, with the cancer and other shit like Lyme disease, I imagine I don't need to help another illness debilitate me, especially in light of the fact that I got lots of life in me after kicking cancer's ass. Besides that, who needs a disease they brought onto themselves by their own lack of discipline. Time to grow up a bit in the eats department.
The only tough other thing about this, besides cutting out some loved food and my beers & ales, is that I have to curtail things I love to do - such as be lazy watching TV too much. That is tougher to get done when I am at home than when away from it for an extended time. For instance in 2009, when I was in AZ for 4 months for work, I lost about 30 pounds in less than two and a half months and kept it off for almost a year after I got home. Then some run of the mill home type shit came up and I started to eat too much crap again and gained most of the weight back but not all of it. After the battle with cancer, I had lost some again, but think I recently gained almost all of that back by being in the doldrums at home.
Now, I am reticent to get on a scale. Numbers on scales don't matter much though, pants size does and with that goal and my blood sugar level in mind, I am hoping to reduce my stomach's tonnage of carbs and thus see the pounds fall away. If I were to do it by the numbers, I would be happy losing 25, very happy to shed 40 and ecstatic to lose 50 pounds. Time will tell. Sorry to bore you with it here but I am betting my blogging about it now and again may be of some help to me in my quest to find the missing thinner me of yesteryear.

Now mind you, I am not and will not be eating only celery and carrots. In fact, I kind of shy away from that stuff even when I diet. What I will be doing is a sort of modified Atkins' Diet of my own making. So, Ill be cutting out lots of carbs but nowhere near all of them although sugary ones will be just about completely out of the question for me.
In fact, you might think I would be overdoing it if you saw what I will be eating such as: pizza, bagels, toast with butter, baked potatoes with butter, buttered corn and so forth. I'll also be eating a lot of salad and meat and probably a bit more of other vegetables and fruit too. For snacks, I'll be eating things like: peanuts, almonds, macadamia nuts, bacon, salami, fruit (limited mostly to bananas, pineapple, apples and berries, citrus fruit - all just out of preference), bacon, chicken wings, bacon, OJ and whatever else that strikes my fancy that is pretty low carb. I'll eat just about anything for my regular meals eating either 3 or 4 a day but making sure to limit carb intake with meals to maybe one slice of bread per meal (maybe one per day for the first few weeks). On the sad side, I will be cutting out beer. Now, that does not mean I will cut out alcohol. I'll be able to drink wine and booze when I want - maybe twice or three times per week - just no beer - at least not for a couple to few weeks. I will miss my beers and ales - that is for sure.
I can eat almost any crappy food out there, short of sweets and super-heavy carb junk foods, and lose weight. I have proven that in the past. Working out is going to help with that - but all I am planning is walking on the treadmill at a decent incline. I have done it before and I can do it again. I have a bit of extra incentive to get this done besides getting down myself to a waistline where size 36 or maybe even a 34" pants from any maker readily fit me again. That added incentive is lowering my blood sugar which has been high seemingly for well over a few years now almost any time it is tested. It's not high enough for me to be diabetic but is getting close. After what I have been through, with the cancer and other shit like Lyme disease, I imagine I don't need to help another illness debilitate me, especially in light of the fact that I got lots of life in me after kicking cancer's ass. Besides that, who needs a disease they brought onto themselves by their own lack of discipline. Time to grow up a bit in the eats department.
The only tough other thing about this, besides cutting out some loved food and my beers & ales, is that I have to curtail things I love to do - such as be lazy watching TV too much. That is tougher to get done when I am at home than when away from it for an extended time. For instance in 2009, when I was in AZ for 4 months for work, I lost about 30 pounds in less than two and a half months and kept it off for almost a year after I got home. Then some run of the mill home type shit came up and I started to eat too much crap again and gained most of the weight back but not all of it. After the battle with cancer, I had lost some again, but think I recently gained almost all of that back by being in the doldrums at home.
Now, I am reticent to get on a scale. Numbers on scales don't matter much though, pants size does and with that goal and my blood sugar level in mind, I am hoping to reduce my stomach's tonnage of carbs and thus see the pounds fall away. If I were to do it by the numbers, I would be happy losing 25, very happy to shed 40 and ecstatic to lose 50 pounds. Time will tell. Sorry to bore you with it here but I am betting my blogging about it now and again may be of some help to me in my quest to find the missing thinner me of yesteryear.

Nice To Know They Are Still Looking...
...for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. I certainly had not seen anything about it in what seemed too long a time but apparently they had spent the last four months mapping the ocean floor in the search area before resuming the search. The search is on once again and will last at least a year or until they find it, whichever comes sooner. See more here:

Maybe Someone Else Has Asked But...
...I have not heard or seen it in print as of yet. I have heard though that Thomas Duncan is in critical condition receiving critical care (source) because he has Ebola. So if no one else has yet asked, then let me be the first to ask: WHO IN HELL IS GOING TO PAY FOR THE THOMAS DUNCAN'S MEDICAL CARE RELATIVE TO TREATMENTS HE IS GETTING FOR HAVING EBOLA? I have not heard one peep out of anyone about it but I want to know:
Does he have health insurance?
Is he rich enough to pay if he does not have insurance?
Is the hospital and all the medical staff attending to him doing it all gratis?
Is it mandatory for him to enroll in a health insurance program under Obamacare?
Now, I am not saying not to treat him. I think it all well and fine that he is being treated, but I sure as hell want to know if I am going to have to foot the bill (I being in the collective as in I one of millions of U.S. Taxpayers). If we are expected to pay even one red cent toward his health care out of our tax dollars, then I believe our government should immediately begin a tort claim against the government of Liberia for letting this shitbag out of their country; then we can sue the airlines too. If anyone else gets it, especially anyone who could only have contracted it after his first visit to the ER, then we should also sue that hospital for any expense the taxpayer is expected to pay for any such additional patient(s). Remember the hospital released him an he had Ebola. Of course, the government should sue him too. He is allegedly the scumbag who lied on his travel document to be able to get out of Liberia after having close contact with another Ebola infected person.
People may think - oh how callous - it is not the time to think of money. The truth is that it is past the time to think of it. We give and give and give and give and if we give it to this guy for free, how many more will try to come here to get treatment for free. It is part of our history all this giving but it is good only up to the point that we are not stealing from Joe to pay Thomas (screw Peter & Paul, I am sick of them too). We have to start making people become responsible for themselves instead of continuing to be a welfare state otherwise our economy will suffer badly - just like it is doing already but just a little bit worse with the addition of each new leech attached to the capillaries of the system and sucking it dry.

Mama, Can I Have Some Too...
...seems to be the thought passing through at least Abby's mind as she sits on my wife's lap at our dinning room table right after we finished our roast chicken dinner. (Yes, all 7 dogs got some when they ate - our 5 and the 2 visitors.) She is staring right at what is left on the platter. Note her good manners though, no elbows on the table. The other one on Linda's lap is Chloe, one of our daughter and son-in-law's visiting Chihuahuas and the third one sticking his head out from under the table is our Pepe.

TEOTWAWKI Was It Foretold By 12 Monkeys?
I am hoping and very much so that the movie 12 Monkeys was not prophetic in any way shape or form. In it, one man spreads a deadly disease that decimates the world's human population. Oh the irony that Ebola may have come from monkeys.
As for one man spreading a virus that kills off most of mankind, let's hope that man is not Thomas E. Duncan. Let's also hope there are not any more mindless twits who have it and plan to travel and then allegedly lie on their travel documents about whether or not they had contact with Ebola victims. The Liberian president plans to prosecute him, I imagine that means if he survives the Ebola, for having falsified a questionnaire asking if he had had any contact with Ebola victims. He reportedly checked off "no" despite the fact he has been reported to have had close bodily contact with an Ebola victim, whom he was assisting, on September 15th. See:

Maybe it's all a case of not wanting to admit to himself that he could have gotten infected, maybe it was a mistake he made on the form he filled out, maybe it was him not giving a shit, maybe it was him fearing they would keep him off of his flight out of Liberia if he checked yes (which is what I would bet on) or whatever but this is not the time for any of that. Now is the time for complete truthfulness and openness about whether or not you may have come in contact with this dreaded disease and lying to be able to travel, if that is what he did, is unforgivable if even only one other person is infected because of him.

Hey Doc Pavia - They Didn't Think It Was Ebola In Dallas Either...
...and they did not take the precautions they would have had they suspected Ebola. Now you too are trying to tell us that a patient in your hospital in Utah is unlikely to have Ebola but you have him (or her) in isolation there even though it is extremely unlikely. Is that prudent caution, panic or just you not admitting you think there is a decent chance it is Ebola?
Did not your patient tell you that he or she had recently been in a country in West Africa? Granted, you say it was not one of the countries involved in the epidemic but it is mighty close, so how is it you have all but ruled out Ebola without having the test results come back yet? Why not just say you are being cautious and you don't know if it is Ebola or not but given the circumstances are taking a good deal of cautionary steps. Mouthing off and giving odds one way or the other has not proven very good technique lately by U.S. medical personnel, in fact it probably led to the release of the other patient when he was first symptomatic.
I give it to you though that you have taken some decent precautions. Good for you guys for isolating the patient, good for taking blood samples and sending them to the CDC but let's just hope that your lack of contact tracking will not prove a mistake in the event your patient is positive for Ebola. Good luck with that, not only to you but to the patient more than anyone.

If the health care system and its personnel were so great - how did this guy go to an ER and get released when he was showing his initial Ebola symptoms? Try to be realistic, we will all be the better for it.

They Are Not Worried About The U.S. Ebola Patient's Privacy Anymore...
...and have released his name and possibly other personal information. I am happy they did so. Anyone who may have been in contact with him should be happy about that too as the authorities finally seem to be grasping the absolute potential for an unprecedented disaster with this situation.
At first about 12-18 people were identified as having been in contact with him since they estimate he was symptomatic and contagious. Now that number has been expanded to 100 people, some of whom have been ordered to remain quarantined in their homes. Among the quarantined, it is reported, are the family members of the patient. Duncan's family allegedly disregarded quarantine recommendations and then were legally ordered by a court to remain in quarantine (source). Should even just one or two of them have been contagious, we are potentially in for one hell of an epidemic cluster fuck because who knows how many other people they came in contact with and so on and on and on....
As for it becoming an epidemic cluster fuck, I say that because it is painfully obvious that the medical community is not knowledgeable of how to control or contain an outbreak and may have even been negligent in this particular case. Take for instance the hospital where he first sought treatment for fever and abdominal pain. A nurse asked him if he had been in Africa and he replied that he had been in Liberia - one of the hardest hit countries by the Ebola epidemic. So what happened, the hospital checked him out, thought he had a low level infection, gave him some antibiotics and let him depart. Reportedly, the information he shared with the hospital was not disseminated properly among hospital staff. (source). .To me, it sounds like the same lame 'I knew nothing about it' excuse used all too often by Obama. Hospital administrators at the hospital have said that had the information been properly passed onto medical personnel, they would have acted differently in his case. Well tell me folks - who did not pass it on properly? They already admitted he told a nurse he had been in Africa - did the info stop right there!
The patient, identified as Thomas Eric Duncan also reported to authorities that he had come in direct contact with a badly ill Ebola patient while in Africa on September 15th (source). One has to wonder, did he not give them that information in the hospital when he first sought treatment for his illness??? I would bet he did tell them but that is a guess on my part.
In addition to Duncan, there was also a person in a health facility in Hawaii who was being held in isolation because it was feared that person also had Ebola. Luckily that person is no longer suspected of having Ebola.
In other Ebola news, it is now feared, by health officials, that Ebola may become an airborne pathogen. That would not be good. Right now, contact with a persons bodily fluids is required to pass on the virus. If it becomes able to infect us just through the air - we are in going to be in dire straits.
