They Are Called Thumb Tacks For A Reason...

...because they were made to be pushed in with your thumb. Yep, sometimes you might need to give one a whack with a hammer but please never use what that this man used.

I imagine he misunderstood, last time he was at the range, when someone commented on the accuracy of his pistol by saying it was a real tack driver.
