The End of The World Upon Us - I Have Stocked Up On Some Extra Supplies

Only about 21 hours and 38 minutes to go before the predicted onset of Judgement Day. While Judgement Day is not slated to be the end of the world or mankind, it may prove to be a rough time even though October 21, 2011 is slated as the day the world ends. With all this in mind, I went to Costco this evening and stocked up on some supplies. I figure we now have enough emergency supplies in the larder to last us 3 to 4 weeks, not including whatever foodstuffs we have on hand normally.

So what did I get. I picked up a variety of food items as can be seen in the accompanying picture. Shame on me for only buying one case of fruit cups, thought I had two. Everything else is there in sufficient quantity to help us make it through a week or two. Add that to what we already had on hand for emergencies and we are good to go about 4 weeks. About the only thing we may not have enough of is water in bottles. I do have several jugs of water, probably another 10 gallons, plus another case of bottles, plus a case of Iced Tea. We also have a water filter that we could use to clean up any water we might need to collect. Besides foodstuffs and water, I have first aide supplies, gas masks and filters, flashlights, batteries, blankets, candles, emergency tools, guns, ammo, precious metal bullion coins, and other things at the ready.

Why am I doing this? It is not because of predictions of cataclysmic doom caused by a Divine power. To understand my reasons all you have to do is take a look around the world at recent disasters that have taken place. Look at what there is a chance could happen, maybe is even likely to happen, to us. Terrorists have already attacked us and want to do it again on a larger scale. Mother nature has been slamming us as of late; storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes all seem to be on the rise in number and in power. We are faced with what some say is global warming, others say is climate change, and I think is just a way for politicians to milk us dry. We also currently face economic huge hardships and possibly will face economic collapse in the not to distant future. Besides all that, we have enemies around the world that are continually building up nuclear arsenals. Look at North Korea, Iran, Red China (I guess nowadays just called China), and the former states of the USSR. They are almost all nuclear capable and if not then are on the verge of being so. Then look at the mid-east and all the revolutions going on there. The governments that will take over are unknown factors except form one thing; they are all Muslim dominated and that could be a problem, for the U.S.A and our ally Israel, that could lead to war. Heck we are already involved in three wars as it is, we do not need another. Then, as of today, or was it yesterday, our president basically told one of our staunchest allies in the world to go screw themselves. Yes, I am referring to the president saying that Israel should go back to pre-1967 boundaries and the Muslim nations saying even that is not enough. We are, in essence, living during the potential eve of destruction without any help from a pissed off God coming to judge us for the final time. So, all that less than supernatural jazz is enough to make me want to take precautions. It always has been enough, ever since I was a young kid during the height of the Cold War. So, I don't need the threat of the wrath of God, demons, zombies or aliens from another world to make me realize that I should be prepared to take care of the ones I love. I was brought up to make such preparations because there I was taught there is always a chance that if you are prepared you possibly can survive the worst kind of disaster.

Now, before you think I may be going overboard, let me tell you this: All the things I bought this evening only cost me about $115.00. Add about the same to that for a total that is close to double that amount and that is the food I have on hand for emergencies - figure about $230 worth. All of the other emergency supplies I have ready probably cost no more than the total of all the food I have. So, maybe I have spent about $460 on emergency supplies. Now think about what just happened in Japan after the Tsunami. Imagine you were stuck in your home after a similar disaster - maybe due to a volcanic eruption, earthquake, floods, storms, or whatever. Or imagine another Great Depression. That is not, or should not be, too far fetched with our present economy! Would you be ready to survive a few weeks in your home before help arrived or would it be that you were to cheap to make some basic preparations for hard times and thus will caught in a bind if it happens here. As for my family, we would be prepared for at least a few weeks of bad times. As time goes on, and as I add more supplies, especially those that can be stored for the long term, I am figuring we will be able to make it through at least a half a year on what I plan to have in stock. Yep, I don't need an angry God, demons unleashed or a zombie apocalypse to get me thinking of how to make it should things go really bad. All I have to do is look around the world and there is more than enough incentive out there to get me doing it without having to worry about doom sayers with their predictions of TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it ).

Some Music For The End Of Days

With only about 38 hours and 44 minutes to go before what some are claiming will be the beginning of the end, Judgement Day, I figured I would pick out a selection of music by which to end it all. They all sort of fit in with the theme in one way or another. This post will take a little extra time to load even though I cut a lot of songs out of the original posting. (What irony - taking extra time to load when we may have run out of time!) It now has 24 songs - one for each hour of the Judgement Day.

EDITED TO ADD: THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN, I WILL BE REMOVING ONE SONG PER HOUR (ON AVERAGE IN INTERVALS OF ABOUT 6 HOURS) UNTIL WE ARE THROUGH THE DAY:

Hopefully we will all still be listening to it come Sunday morning.

Thursday: Update On Judgement Day, Demons Of The Apocalypse, Doomsday, Zombies Rising Up From The Dead And Sex

We have about 65 hours and 59 minutes until the end of the world as we know it (or so some would have you believe). Have you done anything to prepare yourselves yet? I asked my son about it and he laughed at the idea (or was it at me). Anyway, I talked to him for about 2 minutes after that and the next thing I knew he was loading magazines for his AR-15 and our AK-47s. Not because he believes the end of the world is coming but because, after our little talk, he understands it is better to be ready for something and not have needed to take the precautions than to not be ready and suddenly realize, in the middle of a shitstorm bad situation, that you are totally unprepared for it. All this Armageddon jazz just brings this all to mind, so why not take advantage of it.

Me, I have not done much else than blog about it, because my stuff has been ready. Well, I did clean some guns but that is not so much in preparation for doomsday as it is just good maintenance and good preparation for any circumstance in which I may have need for a flawlessly functioning firearm. You know, like all of a sudden I hear scratching on my doors and windows and hear moaning and people screaming and gurgling ripping of flesh sounds and I realize that a horde of zombies has descended on the neighborhood and are all around my house just waiting to either get their next meal or be exterminated. Me, I choose not to wind up as their next entree and I kind of like the idea of being the exterminator.

My son does not usually read my blog, at least I don't think he does. He gets enough of my incessant babbling around the house and whenever he travels with me in the car (a captive audience). Tonight though, just an hour or so ago, I recommended he go read my blog post, from this past Sunday, the one about the 'upcoming end of the world on this coming Saturday'. He went up to his room to read it on his laptop. A few minutes later, he came down and said it was pretty good and he thought it was funny. I asked if besides the funny he saw the serious side of it, the idea about being prepared as being a good thing. He got it, whether for zombies, Judgement day, the end of the world, a natural disaster, a man made disaster or whatever. By the way, he enlightened me (both mentally and spiritually) that the end of the world is not supposed to happen until this October and that this Saturday will only be Judgement Day and the beginning of the end. How little he realized just how wonderfully relieved I was to hear the good news! After that, he just left to go out with his pals.

Now mind you, I am not the only one blogging about Doomsday, or whatever you want to call it. Others are doing it too. Even the government of the United States of America has reportedly done so. As reported by The Wall Street Journal, here in
this article, the CDC wants to know if you are prepared for a zombie apocalypse and then gives you advice on how to prepare for it. Yes they actually tell you how to prepare for zombies. What is up with that? Do you think they believe something cataclysmically evil is about to take place - what with all the predictions of doom, gloom and Judgement Day being upon us and with all the other disasters that have been seen worldwide within the last several months or so. It sure seems like mother nature has been slamming us pretty hard round the world - doesn't it. Or maybe it is truly the wrath of God! It just gets me to wondering why the government is getting in on all of it right now.

My guess is they do not believe one iota of it but want you and I to be prepared for the unexpected in terms of natural disasters or man made ones or maybe even for things like terrorism. (I know of only one thing I would rather shoot more than zombies and that is terrorists - where and when legally justified of course.) So, I am guessing they are just getting in on all the hype with the hope that the timing will actually get more folks to pay attention to what they have to say about emergency preparedness. You know, they tell you to have water, food, first aid kits, blankets, flashlights and batteries and all that stuff. They are actually going about it in a pretty sensible way too. Then again, have you ever known the federal government to be that efficient or reasonable as to do something just because it makes sense! Maybe they know something they are not telling us about all this end of the world stuff!!! Nah, couldn't be anything to it - could it? Just in case there is though, there is one other preparedness detail the CDC blog does not mention but that I try never to fail to mention - guns & ammo. As for ammo and guns - we are set for years.

What they know or don't know, at the CDC, about TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it) does not effect me. I am, and have been, ready for a disaster should it strike, or am at least somewhat ready. My level of preparedness would probably get me and my family through a week or two before we would be forced to go out to resupply with essentials such as taco chips, salsa, popcorn, dog food, Spam (the kind you eat not the online variety and note how it came right after dog food), wine & whiskey, iced tea and whatever. Anyway, I am going to Costco on Saturday morning to stock up on more supplies. So, if Judgement Day goes off as planned, at 6PM (a friend at work had a good question, is that EDST or Greenwich mean time), we should be good maybe for up to 3 to 4 weeks. If it does not happen, well - we will be ready for it the following weekend, or for the earthquake, flood, hurricane, nuclear power plant leak, terrorist acts, the sky falling or for the Horsemen of the Apocalypse followed by all the demons of hell (well maybe not quite all of them). If none of it happens in our lifetimes - so what! We can still eat the chips, salsa and Spam (my wife hates it, I am not sure of how my daughter feels about it, but the son and I love it). And as for all the ammo, we can have a blast with it at the range.

Before I close, I gotta tell you, this end of the world stuff is absolutely amazing. My blog had been averaging around 115 unique visits a day for a couple of weeks about 4 weeks ago. I was happy with that because it was up from the meager 80 to 85 hits I was getting on average prior to that. Then it went back down to the 80s again last week. Well, on Sunday, when I first wrote about all this gloom and doom (and mind you most people do not read blogs on the weekend so some spilled over to Monday), I got 159 visits on Sunday, 202 on Monday, back down to about 80 on Tuesday. Then when I made very brief mention again, early Wednesday morning, about all this 'end of ends' stuff, the visits to my blog skyrocketed to 766 on Wednesday. Wow, people love this stuff and I am guessing that is what the CDC was betting on when they timed their zombie apocalypse preparedness blog just right, in there with all this end of the world stuff. When I wrote my post on Sunday, I was not betting on any such thing, I was just blogging as usual. I most humbly have been amazed at the number of hits my blog has been getting, mostly because of that one piece I wrote on Sunday:

Is The World Going To End Next Saturday

While I sure hope it does not end, that is that the world does not end next Saturday, I kind of figure the skyrocketing interest in my blog will soon crash to earth. Yet, I hope I can find some other ways to peak your interest in my rather mundane blog, to keep up your future visits to it, not as high as yesterday's number of visits but a bit higher than they had been before all this hoopla began. In that light, I may just have to write up all types of future TEOTWAWKI predictions or maybe I can just write about sex. I guess though I should probably stick to things I know about; and so, sadly, I will keep writing about guns, ammo, politics, herps, history, current events and preparedness for doom and gloom. Wish I could have told you it would have been about sex!

All the best,
Glenn B
PS: If the zombies, as in the walking dead, do not show up this Saturday and we all make it through to Sunday unscathed, I may celebrate with some Zombies (not the walking dead kind but the kind you drink that turn you into the walking dead). I think I have most, if not all, of the fixings.

Wednesday Already? Only A Few Days Until Judgement Day, Or Is It Doomsday, Saturday - May 21, 2011

Only 89 hours and about 50 minutes until the end of the world at 6PM this Saturday, May 21st. Are you ready? Me neither but I do have a special bottle of Irish on hand if needed to enjoy my last drink or better yet to celebrate waking up alive and well on Sunday morning. Hope to be giving you an update on Sunday.

Ballseye's Gun Shots 136: Guns - Don't Take Em Apart Unless You Know How To Put Em Back Together Again

The title of this post pretty much says it all unless you add this to it:

"...or you want to spend a lot of time, effort, maybe even some money, and a hit to personal pride to get it right again."

No, I have not taken apart one of my guns without knowing how to reassemble it, not lately anyhow. Someone else left a comment in one of my posts about a rifle he bought and commented he wishes he knew how to put the trigger mechanism back together. Now, I am not saying he did anything wrong; he may not have been the one to take it apart, maybe he bought it that way or whatever. His comment though made me remember a time or three that I took a gun apart and had no clue of how to put it back together again and it pretty much sat there, way too long, looking a lot like Humpty-Dumpty after he had fallen off of the wall.

While there are probably people or resources out there to easily help with getting a gun put back together again, there are also a few obstacles to overcome before it gets to the reassembly point. Let's face it - when you are confident, or stupid, enough to disassemble a gun without first having handy the disassembly and reassembly instructions and you then find yourself unable to reassemble it - you have goofed big time. Now you have to decide what to do next. in current times we can often be thankful, in such situations, for the Internet. The net is often a ready source of free information and a quick or sometimes long and tedious search can help you find the solution you are seeking. The thing about the Internet though is that it also lends itself to capitalism - which in and of itself is a good thing. That is except maybe when you find out that some of the info you thought would be free is only available at a premium price. Such can be the case with firearms manuals or field strip, detail strip, and reassembly instructions.

In the case you have not found it readily available for free, you have some options. You can pay the price or you can continue looking or you can give up for now and wait until what you are looking for miraculously falls in your lap. If you decide that you want the gun to get back together but you do not want to pay the extra cost to buy the instructions, or simply cannot even find them for sale, then you have the option of asking someone for help. The thing about asking for help, in a case like this, usually means you have to swallow your pride and admit - "Whoops, I messed up and have no clue how to do it". For some that is not hard to do. For others - well you know there have been at least a couple or few times in your life when you must have been embarrassed to admit to someone that you screwed up. It is not the end of the world though it is not the easiest thing to do either. If you want to get it back together though, maybe you had best ask for help.

The trick with asking someone else for help is that you have to try to decide, without knowing how to fix it yourself, if the guy now giving you the instructions actually knows what he is talking about or not. If you do it over the Internet, there is always the chance you have some 10 year old kid telling you what to do and he has never seen the inside of a BB gun let alone the firearms you need o reassemble. Heck, why am I picking on 10 year olds, it could be a 20, 30, 40, 50 60, 70 or whatever year old who does not have a clue yet is freely sharing his lack of knowledge with you while at the same time trying to convince you he is a gun repair guru. Then again, even if you go to a gun store or a gunsmith to seek help (where it likely would cost a lot more than would an instruction manual on reassembly), you have no guarantee they know what they are talking about either.

So, we are back to my original advice. Do not take it apart, do not even have a gunsmith take it apart, unless you (or the gunsmith) have detailed instructions on how to disassemble and then reassemble your gun. Of course, some of you (and I rarely fit into this category but have been guilty of it a few times) cannot wait to get instructions before you take a new or otherwise unfamiliar gun apart for cleaning, tweaking or repair and you just do it. For you guys, I have a recommendation, make a video of each step you take to disassemble the firearm. If you don't make a video, at least keep good notes (written or mental) of each step you took to get it apart. Why do that? Many modern, mass produced firearms, if not most of them, can be reassembled in reverse order of how you disassemble them. That is, at least if you disassemble them in proper order.

While you may think you don't need to pay attention to this advice, either because you consider yourself a firearms expert, a knowledgeable gunsmith, an adept armorer, a know it all, a Jack of all trades, or just the type of guy who will never have to take apart a firearm that you own because you will have someone else do it - the truth is: If you own guns long enough you will someday find the need to take one apart and will simply be much better off if you know how to do it right and then properly get it back together again. If the hunting opportunity of a lifetime comes up, if a day at the range with one of your kids is at hand, if a friend wants to check out you awesome new gun, if the SHTF and you need to defend your family or self, you sure don't need your gun laying there in pieces looking like Humpty-Dumpty and you looking and feeling embarrassed. Even though it is good advice and I am the one giving it, I am pretty sure that I will again, someday when I am over anxious, wind up with egg on my face and broken eggshells on my workbench. For the meantime though, I plan to take my own advice.

All the best,
Glenn B

Leapin' Leachies, Reptile Tanks & A Couple Of Corn Snakes Made For An Interesting Afternoon

There I was, yesterday, at the monthly meeting of the Long Island Herpetological Society. I was ready for what I figured would be a ho-hum presentation at best, at just another monthly meeting. Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with the monthly meetings, I just figured this would be a typical one.

I mean, the meeting began as usual, a bunch of us showing up at the classroom at SUNY Farmingdale and waiting for everyone else. We greeted one another, and then chatted about this reptile and that amphibian, or other topics society related or not. More folks came. Some brought animals for sale, other brought tanks and accessories they were trying to offload at decent prices. I made the rounds, said my hellos, jawboned for a bit, then looked at what was on hand for sale. A couple of nice commercially made reptile tanks with lights at $30 apiece, some Kingsnakes, some Corn Snakes, a Rainbow Python, another reptile tank, a bigger one. Nothing was of particular interest to me and I passed on all of them even though the pair of smaller reptile tanks had caught my eye. Still though, I passed. After all - I have enough tanks and enough critters.

Moments before the meeting got underway officially, Dave, the guy selling the Kingsnakes and the pair of tanks (with lights), asked if anyone had a pen. I dug one out of my jacket pocket and he took it, bent over, started writing on his for sale sign, and changed the price of the two tanks he was selling to $20 apiece. When I saw that, resistance was futile. I immediately said I would take both and pay him at the end of the show. Then I thought better and pulled out the cash and almost had to force him to take it. It seems someone else was thinking of taking one of them. I said okay, I will just take one. The other guy, Wayne, was nice enough to let me take them both, in fact he insisted. That was nice.

Now that I had the tanks - I was satisfied. Or was I? Truth be told, the two corn snakes for sale had also caught my eye more so than I at first had allowed myself to believe. One was an Okeetee Corn Snake. The Okeetee Corn Snake is simply a color variant from a particular wild population of corn snakes. The name is often misspelled as Oaketee; the proper spelling is Okeetee, after the Okeetee Club in Jasper County, SC where these snakes were first described by Carl Kauffeld in his book Snakes: The Keeper & The Kept. The other was a reverse Okeetee Corn Snake (the albino variant of the Okeetee morph). My buddy Mark wanted a hundred bucks for the pair (a breeding pair as was obvious by what they were doing in the tank in which he had them). That was a good deal but the heavens knew, I did not need any snakes. I got into newts, salamanders, tortoises and turtles to try to get away from snakes and lizards but I do miss them now and then. Corn Snakes were one of my early interests in herps and are one of the most beautiful among all the snakes that I have kept or seen. Still though, I kept my money and passed on them even though a corn snake expert, Rich H., told me that they were a great deal.

The meeting was called to order soon after my purchase. We all took seats and sat back for what turned out to be the best presentation I had been to so far this meeting year, which began in September and ends next month (we skip July and August for meetings). Steve Cemelli of Leapin’ Leachies, http://leapinleachies.com/index.htm
, gave a the talk. It was all about Rhacodactylus leachianus geckos, which are the largest geckos in the world. They come only from New Caledonia and its surrounding outer islands. It was truly an interesting talk and lots of questions were asked and answered too.

Rhacodactylus, in essence, means big foot, and these beauties do have pretty large feet that help them climb the trees in their forest abodes. On display, Steve had representatives of each of the different varieties of these fascinating lizards. One thing we learned about them was the difference between these geckos when from different locations. Each area of New Caledonia’s big island and each of the small outlying islands seem to have distinct variations among the same species. The differences are so notable that I was surprised to discover they are still classified as a single species. Interesting creatures that eat anything from insects, to other lizards, to birds to one sub-species that eats crabs. Steve had lots of adults in the display and each was brought around the room by LIHS member John H. for all to see. There were even a few juveniles for sale but while I would love to get a few of these and breed them, there is not a chance of it in my near future. They go anywhere from about $400 each up to about $750 each. The ones at the meeting were no exceptions. Possibly a good project for my upcoming retirement but I will have to save my change for quite the while..

Once the talk was over, I headed over to look at those corn snakes again. They sure were a tempting offer and sooner than later I asked Mark if he would take $80 for the pair. He agreed and I am now the new owner of two corn snakes. Surprisingly enough my wife did not seem to mind at all, when over dinner, I told her about them having come home with me.

Funny thing about them, they were mating while Mark brought them to the meeting, again while at the meeting and yet again when I left the meeting with them both in the same tank (one of the tanks I just bought). After the show, I went to visit my mom for awhile and when I left her place, the corn snakes were at it again in the back seat of the car (inside the tank - of course). When I got home, I left them in the car for later retrieval. Then, at about 10:30 PM, my son reminded me they were in the car. He had gone out somewhere, in the car, and I guess he was sort of surprised to find them there (not too surprised as well as he knows his old man). Well, when I went out to get them, yep - they were at it again. If the female is only 6 years old as I was told, then she is still young enough to lay eggs, and if both she and the male are fertile, then I got a good deal indeed. Corn Snakes can lay up to 25 eggs, or more, in a single clutch. The average is lower at about 12 to 15. Even if she lays only that many and they all hatch, I can make my money back if I sell the babies from a single clutch. She can have as many as two clutches a year.

Nope, not just another ho-hum presentation and not just another monthly meeting, at least not for me.

All the best,
Glenn B

PS: Pics of the snakes will be published, in the not too distant future, in a new post, probably this coming weekend.

President Obama - Why Not Stop The Balderdash And Really Secure Our Borders

Mr. President, isn't it about time you stop the political lollygagging. While you are at it, how about stopping the incessant and repetitive political balderdash about the security of our porous borders and about how great illegal dirtbag aliens are for our nation before one more U.S. Citizen is killed by one of them who walked across our border unimpeded.

Thanks to Wirecutter for having this up on KnuckledraggingMyLifeAway.

Is The World Going To End Next Saturday?

I normally would never have even given it a moment's thought - not in a million years. Yet, someone out there thinks the world is going to end on May 21, 2011. I was driving to work on Wednesday or Thursday when I saw the pictured van in front of me. We were stuck in the typical traffic of a NYC morning and after looking at it a few times, I remembered my camera. How could I resist. Since it was stop and go traffic, I waited till we stopped and grabbed my camera, turning it on with a single click. Then I waited for a good moment to take a shot without worrying about crashing. The pic came out pretty clearly even though through my dirty windshield.

The message on the back of the van comes through pretty clearly too. Next weekend, on Saturday, May 21st, the world comes to an end as the result of an earthquake and God's coming wrath. Yes, next Saturday will be the big one of big ones, Judgement Day - that is according to the words on the van. I imagine the guy responsible for the van is the same guy who reportedly has spent about $140,000 of his money on ads to the same effect. Robert Fitzpatrick reportedly spent the money on ads that appeared on mass transit kiosks and subway car placards. Another man, Harold Caming, even has a website dedicated to the whole idea that May 21, 2011 will be
Judgement Day.

As I said, normally I would not, in a million years, give even a first thought to this let alone a second thought but let's face it their have been powerful portents. All this melting of the poles (as predicted by that holy of the holiest Al Gore) and then the floods and other destruction. You know, all the rain, and the floods, and the tornadoes, and the floods, and the earthquakes, and the floods and the tsunamis that caused other floods. All things that were preceded by some of the most evil times on earth as per some of the more religious people I have heard lately. Let's face it, all this terrorist crap alone has made the world an ugly evil place let alone the pedophiles, rapists, murderers, thieves, racists, corrupt politicians, unholy religious leaders and religious groups (like those sickos who protest the funerals of our fighting men and women). Now add to the mix all the prophecies of doom and gloom for 2012, the recent earthquake predictions for Rome last week (and they had a big one in Spain) and now the latest
Renfield-like, madman over on the Spanish Island of Tenerife (in the Canary Islands). Yeah, I mean the guy who pulled a reverse John The Baptist who, instead of being beheaded, beheaded someone else just yesterday, then was heard screaming: "God is on earth".

Hmm, Tenerife! Isn't that in the Canary Islands? Isn't that where the scientists say there is a volcano that they expect will someday erupt causing half of itself fall into the ocean! Yep that is the one, the same one they say that has enough mass, in the half they expect to go crashing into the sea, to cause a Tsunami. They also say they expect the Tsunami to hit the eastern USA hours later with waves as high as 90 meters. Get that, not 90 feet, 90 meters. (Mind you, I am taking this all from my muddled middle aged memory after seeing a show about it on television several months back). Since my memory is not that good, I just checked online and found the site at this
link. It is a fairly long piece probably beyond the tolerance levels of most Internet surfers so allow me to say, it discusses the possibilities and the author is claiming the threat is all just a bunch of bunk. I think though that the author may have only considered what would happen if the volcano on La Palma breaks apart and falls into the sea. It appears he may not have considered that maybe, just maybe, a huge earthquake causes it and the huge earthquake plus the mountain falling into the ocean is what produces the substantial energy to create the wave action necessary for a Tsunami. Then again, maybe he considered it and I missed it since I was almost falling asleep while reading it - it is that long.

I can say with some certainty though, the author of that piece did not once mention the wrath of God in his equations. I suppose if you add up all the possibilities, including a pretty miffed God, and if you figure on just how many doom sayers have been getting it wrong with their predictions of the end of the world being upon us, and that sooner or later one of them will get it right, and the fact that one day the world will come to the end of the world as we know it (TEOTWAWKI), and the number of years the scientists say the earth has been in existence which has been a long - long - long time to have lasted without the end being upon us, and all the barrels of oil (remember that important quality of oil - it lubricates) that we have removed from beneath the crust and upper mantle of our planet, and remembering
plate tectonics and all the hints in the form of recent seemingly natural catastrophes going on and on and on, and the Renfield type nut job beheading that woman in on Tenerife (in Spain in the actual Island chain where the big one is supposed to begin with the eruption of the volcano on the island of La Palma), and the recent earthquake in nearby mainland Spain, and the upcoming end of the Mayan Calendar (yeah I know its in 2012 but too close to neglect here) , and the latest doom sayer saying it will be next Saturday - well, you could arrive at the conclusion that the odds are against us and are in favor of Judgement Day being upon us - with God finally returning and being pretty pissed off when he arrives let alone all the tormented souls in Hell being released to again walk the earth.

Yikes - what to do???

I figure that getting down on my knees and praying will do no good. Either I have lived life right enough or not, and if it really is less than a week from the final countdown, I am guess it is too late for me to repent. Heck - just trying to remember all the things for which I need to repent would take longer than a week. So, being the cantankerous, stubborn, pig headed, anti-authoritarian and sometimes resourceful kind of a guy that I am, I am going to make sure I have enough bullets on hand. I am also going to: clean an oil all of my rifles and pistols, make sure we have some drinking water and food on hand to last a couple of weeks, and I will make sure the batteries in the flashlights are fresh (I figure doomsday could get pretty dark and dreary). I also am getting ready for the dead rising up to again walk the earth along with the unleashing of all the demons in Hell. I figure if they really do that like some folks say the good book says, I am going demon and zombie hunting on Judgement Day! It should be a fun tale to tell. Well, that is if I live through it and can later recount the adventure of it all to my grandchildren. One can hope, can't one. Now I have got to start getting busy getting ready because this time could be the time when we run out of time and if that will be the case then there is little time to be getting ready in time.

My plan is simple and can be effected in almost no time. I plan to let loose, in a timely fashion, with a case or three (or more) of ammo on them
demons and zombies as I successfully fight for my family's survival, or before my demise, if either is Heaven's plan for me. You can bet though, whatever is Heaven's plan or Hell's plan, I plan to take a shot at tilting the odds in my favor! Before I start though, I have to take out the trash and get some gardening done. It seems something is always cutting down on my time to have fun so I guess I'll have to end it all right now (the blog post, that is) and here. I'll see you all next Sunday morning with a follow-up. As I said, one can hope, can't one!

Bulgarian Maniac Beheads Apparently Unarmed Retiree

A Bulgarian reportedly beheaded a woman, yesterday, in a supermarket on the Spanish island of Tenerife. This is why, if you can be armed, you should always be armed:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1386762/British-woman-beheaded-Tenerife-machete.html

If reading that article did not scare you enough to arm yourself, then read this one:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1387225/Woman-beheaded-Tenerife-retired-grandma-Norwich.html

That was the original article I read about it, it goes into more detail about how the guy was stalking his victim and how the woman realized he was stalking her. She even went into a government office and asked for help. Then when she thought all was clear, she left and he again was tailing her and reportedly followed her into the store where he killed her. Too bad she was not the one who had the thought to grab a knife or machete in the store.

May she rest in peace and may the guilty party receive true justice at the end of a rope.

Be careful out there,
Glenn B

Today Was A Pretty Nice Day For Me

I had a pretty nice day today. I drove out to my sister's neck of the woods on eastern Long Island this morning 9ad into the early afternoon). My destination was not my sister's house but the local village hall. Along the way, I saw my friend and fellow Long Island Herpetological Society member, John H on the road - headed in the wrong way. I pulled a u-turn and flagged him down and we headed to the village hall in tandem. We were there in a couple of minutes where we were met by my sister. Shortly thereafter, a custodian arrived and he let us in to the building. Others also started to show up - the others being Cub Scouts dropped off by their parents. John and I, with some help from the others started to unload the special cargo of our cars and put everything inside. Soon enough we were set up and the show began.

The show was nothing less than a Long Island Herpetological Society presentation on reptiles & amphibians for the local Cub Scout pack. John and I each took turns showing various herps to the scouts and the two oms who stayed with them (my sister and a nice lady Ann Marie). We showed off a good variety of critters including: 2 Corn Snakes, 2 Hermann's Tortoises, 3 Crested Geckos, a bearded Dragon, 2 Red Foot Tortoises, a Morning Gecko, a Leachianus Gecko, a really beautifully colored Panther Chameleon, an Anderson's Salamander, 5 Blue Tailed Fire Belly Newts, a Blue Tongued Skink, and an African Clawed Frog. We had a absolutely captive (or captivated) audience for over an hour. It was not until the snacks came out that we started to lose the interest of the youngsters. I have to hand it to these kids, mostly 10 year olds and a 14 year old, they were pretty sharp. Not only did they ask really intelligent questions, they answered questions likewise and they had several points to make along the way.

I have got to hand it to my friend John, his presentation of his animals was quite informative. He sure knows his stuff when it comes to lizards and he sure has some interesting ones! Both I and the scouts were lucky he came along today.

After that we all parted ways and I headed home. I called the wife while en route to ask if she wanted to go out to diner and she told me she already had plans to go out with our daughter and our neighbor Trish. Then I asked if we needed anything from the supermarket or Costco and she said "nope". I drove on and decided to make a stop at a pet shop on the way. I needed some dog snacks, and some fish food for my newts, salamanders and tropical fish. Just before I got to the shop, I called my son and asked him if he wanted to go out to dinner with his old man. He said 'let's go'. I made my stop and headed right home. At home, we I offloaded all the critters with Brendan's help and soon after we were off.

We headed into Glendale, Queens, to Zum Stamtisch - a really good German restaurant and bar. It was packed when we got there and I asked if he wanted to sit at the bar to eat. he agreed and as luck would have it, 2 people were just leaving the bar and we had a couple of seats at an otherwise packed bar. We had a nice meal, I had a few drinks, my first bier in about 2 or 3 months and 2 shots of Kirschwasser. I was only going to have the bier and one shot, but an old friend who bartends there bought me a second shot. Brendan had a single Hefe Weisse Bier, same as I had. It was a good time but too short and the next thing I knew we were headed home.

When I got home, Brendan stayed out to go meet some of his buds. I came down to the basement, fed the fish and plopped down to watch some TV and write a blog post. Just as I sat down to start blogging, I felt something on my arm tickling me. I looked over and found a freeloader who probably hitched a ride on me out near my sister's place. It was a tick, her area is loaded with them. Lucky for me, it was only crawling on me and had not, to my knowledge, sank its mandibles into me for a meal. Last time I found a tick stuck in me, from out that way, I got a rash. I went to the doc who told me don't worry because it was absolutely, positively, definitely not a Lyme Disease rash. She did a test anyway and yes, of course, it was positive. Second time I had it for sure, probably the third time in actuality. I do not want it again, my joints have suffered enough. Anyway, the tick today was not a deer tick, it was way too large. You can bet I am happy about that and that I did not find it dining at my expense.

Now I am blogging and half assed watching a movie called Event Horizon. I think I need to pay more attention to the movie, so later 4 U.

All the best,
Glenn B

Ballseye's Gun Shots 135: Your Ammo Cache - Is It Too Much, Just Enough...

...Or Nowhere Near What You Might Need?

I did an inventory not too long ago and I'll be damned if I can find it now, but I think I thought I had just about enough 9mm Luger Ammo on hand to last me quite awhile. If I remember right, just off the top of my head, my muddled middle aged memory tell me I had about 3 or 4K of 9mm rounds on hand. "Wow", you say, "that seems like a lot". Really it is not. That is why I bought some more, another 500 rounds, soon after I did the inventory.

Since the inventory, I have probably shot at least 750 rounds of it at the range. Yet, you may think it still seems I have a good amount left over. Truth is though, next month I am going to an NRA firearms instructor school that requires me to bring along 900 rounds of 9mm ammo plus the shotgun ammo I will need for the course. Once I shoot that up, what will I have. Well, if my memory as to the inventoried amount was right, even at the high end, then after the training I would be down 750 rounds from range trips so far, another 900 from the planned training, and whatever else I will have shot in between now and the NRA training. For example, I had planned to go to the range last night but got delayed and did not make it. I had 400 rounds in my tricky bag to shoot through my Glock 26. If did use all that, then my inventory would be significantly lower, by about 1,700 to 1,950 rounds in total. If I was at 4K rounds when I did the inventory that would mean I'd only have 2,050 rounds of it left. Just think how fast that could go and then I'd have none! Thank goodness for sales on ammo because I just bought that other 500 rounds of 9mm ammo about a week or two ago. I received it a few days or so ago. Yep, I like to make sure I have enough on hand - just in case I need a case - or two - for a rainy day or a zombie attack or a terrorist insurgency or for NRA training.

Some say you can never have enough ammo and I agree as long as I an holed up in my house safe and secure. If I ever have to lug a bunch of it around with me while afoot, well then, I surely would be of the mind i could have too much. That is, at least until I ran low.

All the best,
Glenn B

No Blogging Due To...

...a couple of things. First of all, Blogger was down for hours upon hours upon hours, so I did not get a chance to post anything Friday morning when I had time to do so. It may have been down Thursday night too, I don't remember because I was too bushed to blog. As for Friday night, I am not sure if Blogger was up and running by then. I just got home from work and it is already the wee hours of Saturday morning. Oh well. I will be busy later today but should get time to blog again on Saturday evening, that is if Blogger is up and running.

Did I Piss You Off Or Just Get More Boring Than Usual?

I ask because my readership has fallen pretty drastically over the past two weeks or so. I had been averaging about 110-120 unique visits a day (certainly not a lot but good for my blog). I am down to about 80 a day now. Any suggestions as to which of my interest you would like me to write more about? Please keep it civil if you do make a suggestion.

Thanks,

Raffaele Bendandi - Was He A Seer Of Doom & Gloom

So, back in 1915, the guy supposedly predicts that on May 11, 2011 the planets, stars and whatever else will all be aligned just right causing a major earthquake in Rome, Italy. Today, people in Italy sort of panicked. Parents called in to schools saying their kids would be out today, other people banged in sick at the office (up to 20% of Romes workforce reportedly stayed out of work today), others slept outside or in campers to be away from buildings - all just in case. You see, the last time this guy had predicted an earthquake, that preceded his prediction for today, there was an earthquake where he predicted it but two days late. The thing is though, there is supposedly no proof he actually predicted a quake for today but for some reason people in Rome think he did so. See:

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2011/05/11/quakes-hit-italy-rome-despite-myth/

Regardless of whether or not he actually made such a prediction, guess what - no earthquake in Rome today and guess what day is in two days if he really did predict one and it comes late - Friday the 13th. Of course, maybe this time his prediction is not two days off the mark but two countries off the mark. There were two earthquakes in Spain today. They caused scores of injuries, some deaths and structural destruction on a pretty wide scale in the area they hit. Coincidence or did he (or the rumor) hit it just right??? See:

I report, you decide.

NRA LE Instructor School

Not much time to blog tonight. I am in the middle of making reservations for my upcoming trip to Allentown, PA for the NRA LE Handgun & Shotgun Instructor Development School next month. It is a way off, but hotels do have a habit of filling up before the great procrastinator (that would be me) books a room. I have , at least, learned that much in my travels. I don't want to stay at some dive for 5 or 6 days, so I am trying to get it all arranged tonight.

Osama bin Laden Death Photo versus Home Videos and Photos

One Man's Personal Opinion:

So, they refuse to show the photograph(s) of Osama bin Lead-in Laden as that scrawny pig was laying there dead, shot in his head. Why will they not show it? Because they say it would be insulting to terrorists, Islamic extremists, and Muslims in general - and that the death picture may incite them to violence. However, they are more than happy to shove in our faces pictures, of Osama bin Laden in life, without a worry in the world that these photographs and videos will inspire terrorists to take actions against us when they see their deceased leader when he was still alive and well. Nor do they even consider, not even for one brief moment, that We The People of the United States of America might be insulted by having to see photos, and worse yet home movies, of that piece of pig droppings while he was alive and well.

After they killed him (which is about the only thing the government seems to have gotten right) what did they do that was insulting to the people of America? First they gave the utmost respect to the remains of the most wanted and despised man in our history. They even bathed it. Then they buried it within the timeframe according to Islamic custom even though bin Laden was a terrible sinner by the tenets of that religion (well that is if you believe the people who make excuses for Islam by saying it is only extremists and not the religion that is at fault). Then, even though they have pictures of him dead, they refuse to show them to us or the world saying it could insult Muslims and incite them to violence against the United States or our troops.

Don't they get it yet - because we are America, a freedom loving nation, we incite them to violence against us just by being us. Holy bumbling bureaucrats Batman, these guys are truly dunderheads! Don't they realize that even drawing a harmless cartoon incites them to violence, they are prone to it and seek to destroy us by it if we do not convert. Then again, even if we convert we need to remember that they even kill one another quite regularly over the most inane of matters. Now our leaders want to inundate us, not the Muslim community, with home photos and videos of this guy. Why would we want to see home photos and videos of a despicable person who would not have been worth the dog dirt on the bottom of my shoe had I just stepped in a pile of it. Remember this ridiculous posturing by our politicians and bureaucrats. Keep it all somewhere in the back of your minds to be triggered the next couple of times you visit a polling place and are about to vote. Vote how you want but please think about all this first.

Better yet, do something now too. Wr
ite to your elected officials, now! Complain about this, now! Make a fuss, raise holy hell or unholy hell for that matter but do it now! Are you mad, then tell them you are mad, now! Tell them to stop this absolute absurdity and to act like real Americans. Show the world that we killed the bastard and what the result looks like when you attack us. Then tell the rest of the terrorists in Al Qaeda and the Taliban that we are coming for them next - to do them the same way or worse. You might be surprised of the effect it will have on them being that we have all that computer information on them. Then set the missiles flying and the SEALS a killing and let our soldiers wage war the way it should be waged - with the goal of our victory and a totally defeated enemy. You won’t make our country safe by coddling our foes, you will make it safe by killing them off until they surrender or are all dead.

All the best
to patriotic Americans,
Glenn B

Happy Mothers' Day...

...to all of you mothers out there. I hope you enjoy your day.

I am going to see my mom this morning and try to put a smile on her face. I'll spend some time with her, then head home to spend some time with my wife and mother-in-law (who is coming to visit).

Hope your day is a nice one.

Did President Obama Recently Throw The Ultimate Bomb of Post-Mortem Insults at Osama bin Laden

I doubt that I am the first to think of this but then again I have not heard any other poor demented psyches make mention of it. I was wondering if president Obama recently, either inadvertently or purposefully, took the ultimate after death pot-shot at Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda and maybe even the world of Extremist Islam. I mean, how else could you see it when Pres. Obama said:

"We don't need to spike the football..."

If that is not insulting to a radical Islamist, if it is not something that could or should incite extremist Muslims to violence, then nothing is such. It is much worse than showing them a picture of the now dead leader of al Qaeda, isn't it? After all, my friends, of what is the classic American football made? Let me give you a hint or three:

It is not made from synthetic material

It comes from a farmyard animal

Oink, oink, oink...

Yes, you guessed it (or knew it already). The classic American football is made out of the skin (actually the bladder) of the pig - hence the other name for a football: a PIGSKIN. As in, "Pass the pigskin to bubba and he will score" (no they do not mean the pork rinds).

Maybe this President Obama guy is really an all American after all. Now, mind you, one good thing done by him followed by one hell of a great insult to that piece of pig shit Osama bin Laden and his pig shit buddies in al Qaeda doesn't mean I am going to vote for the reelection of President Obama. Perish the thought starting right now! It simply means I am going to take it for granted, until the president himself says otherwise, that when he said: "We don't need to spike the football...", in reference to not showing the body or death picture of bin Laden, the football to which he was referring was Osama bin Laden himself (the photo only being a representation of him) AND I am taking it for granted that he was making a reference to bin Laden as a pigskin to purposefully throw and insult at him and al Qaeda!

Way to go Mr. President - with all due respect sir and in my personal opinion - not only did you finally do something right (let's face it if you wanted to commit political suicide you could have said "NO" to going for bin Laden) you actually may have said something right - and both all in one week! Maybe next you will admit that water-boarding was not torture as classically defined and that because of it we obtained the first clue in a long line of clues that led to killing the most wanted pig on earth and thus you will drop the investigation of those who used it and instead pin medals on their chests.

We don't need to spike the PIGSKIN football..." - I have been rolling on the floor laughing my ass off over that one. It is the best one liner I have heard in years.

All the best,
Glenn B

PS: President Obama having said that almost lends credence to a rumor I heard that: Just before the bag containing bin Laden's body was sealed, some enterprising Navy personnel placed a football in his arms, then sewed the body bag shut so he could rest through eternity holding a pigskin. Was it coincidence that the president used spiking the football!!! I am sure it was just a coincidence of a rumor and a great insult coming one right after the other. Yeah right!

Osama Bin Laden Remembered - Almost As Good As A Day Without Mexicans

BOGUS NEWS FLASH:

Now that Al Qaeda has confirmed the death of their leader Osama bin Laden, a call has gone out for all followers in the USA to pay homage to him for a week in the near future. Stock prices for 7-11 fell drastically as 7-11 has announced that store managers, for 98% of its stores nationwide, have said they will be closing next week due to 'a death in the family'.

In addition, on a local note: Mayor Bloomberg of New York City has announced there will be an increase in the number of buses and subway trains operating next week due to the anticipated shortage of taxi drivers. It is also anticipated that most newsstands in the NYC area will be closed.

On the brighter side, U.S. beer and whiskey manufacturers have seen a quadrupled increase in sales as Americans celebrate a small victory in the War on Terrorism.

Believe that one and I'll tell you another. Don't blame me, I just received an email with a briefer version of that and just felt compelled to have some fun with it. A hat tip to my friend Bob for giving me the inspiration for this one. Now, back to the serious, or is it the delirious, side of life.

All the best,
Glenn B

Is Charles Rangel Out of His Mind?

I just woke up and turned on Fox News. Granted, I was still groggy and was in no condition to be greeted by them doing an interview of Congressman Charles Rangel but then when is one ever prepared for such balderdash as what he spews forth. Well, there he was on Fox News moments ago, and if I understood his babbling style of speech correctly, he was saying that if we cannot tell him under what flag was Al Qaeda, or tell him who they are, then we cannot argue against his point that we do not belong in Afghanistan. He also seemingly argued that we have not achieved anything in Afghanistan in tracking down Al Qaeda. He also, in essence, said that intelligence obtained by torture is invalid and therefor not apparently responsible for accomplishing anything.

Tell me, where were the people captured who we have in custody in Gitmo, captured? What type of technique was use on them, by our CIA, before they got to Gitmo? What information did they give us that led to the assassination of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden? Is Charlie Rangel of of his friggin mind! I think so.

How he can be so flipping ignorant and still be reelected time after time simply amazes me.

The Last of the Last - Claude Choules Has Set Sail For His Final Sunset

The last surviving combat veteran of WWI, also a veteran of WWII, passed away yesterday, peacefully, in his sleep., he was 110. Claude Choules joined the British Navy at the age of 15 and did his first bit of service aboard a training ship. By the next year he was assigned to serve on a battleship. He survived WWI, moved to Australia and joined the Australian Navy in which he served during WWII. More info here:

More on his life here:

There is only one other known surviving veteran of WWI - Florence Green. She was in the British Woman's Royal Air Force; however, she was not a combatant. It is the end of an era of fighting men, who believed that their war was - The War To End all Wars.
