If what the captain of the ACX Crystal container ship is saying is true (and that is a big if) then it seems as if whoever was at the helm of the United States' guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald may have been proverbially asleep at the helm.
"In the first detailed account from one of those directly involved, the cargo ship’s captain said the ACX Crystal had signaled with flashing lights after the Fitzgerald “suddenly” steamed on to a course to cross its path.
The container ship steered hard to starboard (right) to avoid the warship, but hit the Fitzgerald 10 minutes later at 1:30 a.m., according to a copy of Captain Ronald Advincula’s report to Japanese ship owner Dainichi Investment Corporation that was seen by Reuters." (Source.)
Whether or not that is the unvarnished truth remains to be seen. It may be considered somewhat questionable in light of the fact that the container ship reportedly steamed on for another 6 miles before making a U-turn to go back to the scene of the collision and the captain reportedly did not contact authorities about the collision until one hour had passed. Something it seems to me is not right about that. Of course, a tardy report and steaming on after the collision may have little or nothing to do with the veracity of the captain's statement that his ship had warned the destroyer before the collision and that the destroyer maintained course regardless of the warning. Being that there are currently six ongoing investigations, it may take some time to fathom it all out but one has to hope that the truth is gotten to in the end to avoid such a terrible tragedy in the future and to give the families of the fallen sailors some sort of peace.
