June 6th - Seventy Years Ago Today...

...is a day that humanity should never forget because it was the day that began a push, like none before it or after it, to liberate Europe from the Nazi horde and to save the world from being overrun by them. Today is the anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy or D-Day (as it is widely known). It was the allied invasion of mainland Europe that ultimately led to the defeat of Germany and the Axis forces in WWII. Many died before that day and many after it but that one day was and remains a day that changed history and a day that was bathed in the blood of allied, and especially American, heroes. More American troops, were killed that day than from any other allied nation - far more than half of the casualties were from the USA. Think about them today, remember them, honor them and their memory, teach your children about them so they can teach their children and their children's children. They were true heroes that day, they really did save the world.

Beretta Fathers' Day Sale

I just went to the Beretta site and ordered a 92 Series Spare Parts Kit. I have wanted to purchase it for awhile now and either it has been out of stock or I just did not have the $164 for asking price when it was in stock. I don't really have the cash right now either but I figured it would be a good deal with the 25% off for their Fathers' Day sale (and I have a couple of guns up for sale so probably will have the cash sooner or later and if not that's why I put in on plastic).

The deal wound up surprising me and being even better than I imagined. There was a link on the left side of the page to like Beretta on Facebook that, had it worked, was supposed to get me an additional 10% off. As I said though - that would have been had it worked. The link let me like Beretta on Facebook but did not give the 10% off code. So I searched around for it. I visited RetailMeNot and checked for Beretta coupon codes. They had several of them but none worked, that is except for one - the Facebook code - fbfan13. That got me the additional 10% off of my order for a total of 35% off or a discount of $57.40 - sweet! So, I got the 92 Series Spare Parts Kit for $106.60 instead of $164.00. Of course, I had to pay shipping and tax and that amounted to another $20.00 between the two. Total for it shipped, with the tax man satisfied, $126.60. Not bad at all. I wish I could buy a 92FS, or any Beretta pistol, at a 35% savings but I'll have to settle for the spare parts kit.

Remembering The Man...

Deciding On Guns To Sell - It Ain't Easy

I am planning on attending an upcoming gun auction later this month but am kind of low on cash. With that in mind I was thinking of maybe going through my collection and making a decision as to which of them I could sell. And I thought about it and thought some more and hemmed and hawed and finally, after about a week of that, pulled them out today to give them all a once over to see if I have any with which I feel I can part.

I decided to offer up my Winchester Model 12, break action, single shot shotgun. It is an oldie, I figure made before 1952 and thus older than me and it has been through a lot. There is pitting on the receiver and barrel but the bore is nice and shiny and everything works.

 

My son has test fired and so did I and it went bang every time. So, I am asking $200 (negotiable) for it but only in a local sale through Long Island Firearms classified section. If it does not sell within a few days, I may take the ad down and put up another but on GunBroker.com. Then again, I may decide to keep it if it does not sell on LIF. My son just found out I am selling it and his was highly disappointed. He told me it is a great gun and to keep it. It cannot get a better recommendation than that as far as I am concerned.

 

I haven't listed anything else yet but an considering whether or not to sell my Remington Model 241 Speedmaster. There are a few small surface scratches on the metal but I think it is in excellent condition as there is at least 90% metal finish remaining (maybe more) and the wood is in very good condition. It works flawlessly. That one will be a bit harder to part with so I am still hemming and hawing over the possibility selling it. I am guesstimating I could get about $350 for it, maybe more. I am basing my price assessments on the Standard catalog of Firearms but my edition is 2 years old; I ordered a new one and should have it by Wednesday.

 

I my also sell a New England Firearms Pardner shotgun that I own. It is a break action, single shot and it great shape except it has some rust freckling on the barrel. I removed the rust with an oiled cloth. Otherwise it is in excellent condition and you can barely notice the freckling. It would not bring in much but would probably give me enough cash a motel for the trip to the auction. I am guessing I could get $100 for it.

 

I also have a Polish Trainer, Mosin Nagant type, single shot rifle in .22LR. I may sell that one too. Who knows; not me, at least not yet anyway! I don't know if any of them will actually sell or even if I will put more than the Winchester up for sale. If they do sell, then I am certain that I will regret having sold them after the sale. It has been that way with almost every gun I have ever sold. The only solace I would have is if I actually used the money from their sales to buy a gun or three at the auction. Of course, that is iffy because even though I bid someone else could always out bid me.

 

Decisions, decisions - I think I will have a beer and ponder all that for a bit.

I Thought 20 Pounds Of Binary Explosives Was A Lot...

...and I imagine that if I set off all 20 lbs. at once, it would be one heck of a boomer and quite the sight at that. Still, it would never compare to 300 pounds of it being blasted off at once. Watch the embedded video and see for yourselves. Yes, the video is in essence an over 9 minute long advertisement but it was fun watching the buildup to the explosion nonetheless and certainly was enjoyable, for me, to see the detonation. It also gave me kind of a chuckle to see the cheek weld of the millennium. Watch it, you will see what I mean.



I figure it would have been a whole lot more awesome had they included a gallon or two of gasoline atop all the binary compound but then I imagine the cost would have been prohibitive to bring in the local fire company to make sure that the forest did not burn down had something like that gone off. Kids (and adults) don't try it at home with or without the gasoline. Seriously, if you don't know what you're doing that would be an extremely dangerous undertaking.

Budwiper May Have Finally Gotten It Right...

...with their product (or Bud Light's product) Mang-O-Rita. I have had a few of them tonight and must say that they are a pretty tasty beverage and they have decent effect (at least on me). Four small cans of them have me decently buzzed. They are much better than Lime-A-Rita and I am sure (even though I never had one) that they are much more to my taste than the similar ones flavored like strawberries.

My Sister Sent Me An Email...

...just minutes ago (or at least that I read minutes ago) in which she called someone a "twat-waffle". In my 58 years, I have never heard that one, leave it to my own sister to enlighten me. I replied to her that:

The "fucking twat-waffle" that is a good one. I can only imagine how hard a woman's legs would have to clamp around my head to turn me into that - oh what a delightful thought!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then again sister-dear, what have you been doing?????? LOL."

Can You Help Me Figure Out The Caliber...

... of these massive looking shooters? Yes, that was a question for my red blooded manly readership and you ladies should notice that the "s" in the word shooters is crossed out making it another word altogether. Men (or women so inclined), take a look at the photo and tell me if you can guess the caliber of what this young female gunslinger is packing. A friend of mine said they were 40's maybe even 45's but I said they had to be 50 caliber - at the very least.

It's Kind Of Hard To Say - Happy Memorial Day...

...not because I am anti-military and not because I am a bad American (I am neither) but because this day is the one on which we are supposed to honor they who gave their lives in military service while defending our great nation. How can you easily look someone in the eye and tell them to have a happy day when they lost someone and today is the day to remember them? It is a tricky thing because the tears may flow as old wounds are brought to memory.

Nonetheless, I wish all of you a happy Memorial Day as I ponder what life would have been like had those who have fallen in our defense not made the ultimate sacrifice. While it does not in any way make me happy that they are gone from among us, I think we all can be happy that they were so courageous and patriotic to have defended us and that we live essentially as a free nation because of them. Take some time today to think about them and to honor them - we owe them our lives.

The Isla Vista Shootings

I just finished watching the morbid manifesto video (be advised it is pretty intense, graphic in the mental picture he paints, and not for the weak of heart or young children) allegedly left by Elliot Rodger prior to his allegedly killing 7 people and wounding others in Isla Vista, CA. I also read up some more on it as I have been doing on and off all day.

To me, the most disturbing thing of all was the fact that his parents notified the police, weeks ago, about YouTube videos that the alleged shooter had posted and that reportedly dealt with killing people and suicide (source); and then the police investigated and it seems it was left at that, with the soon to be alleged shooter remaining free. Had the laws been more similar, than not, to those in effect when I was a young lad, the guy would have been detained at the very least for a mental evaluation in someplace like Bellevue (a hospital in NYC with a mental facility where police often bring emotionally disturbed suspects) and if found to be bonkers and a threat to others he would have been detained in a mental institution, by force if necessary, possibly for the long term. That surely does not happen today, as regularly as it once did, when potentially harmful crazies are encountered by the authorities.

It truly is a crying shame that dangerous lunatics are allowed to roam freely among us and yet we law abiding citizens are punished for their, the crazy people's, actions by repeatedly having our rights and liberties restricted more and more after each such act of madmen. What makes it worse is that our rights and liberties are continually restricted more and more not to really protect anyone but merely for political reasons so leftists can get votes and gain control over us. After all, isn't California one of the most restrictive states when it comes to firearms! Yet, this obviously, in my opinion, very mentally ill person was able to acquire a gun or guns and kill people even. That even after the police were forewarned (and I am not blaming the police) weeks in advance of his potential and or his intentions to kill folks. I would bet that their hands were tied because being tolerant of loonies is par for the course in CA (as it is in too much of the USA). If that is not a shameful situation for us to be in then nothing is and something really ought to be done about dealing with the real problem - the people who are out of their minds and who actually pull the trigger in such shootings because they are free to do as they please even when seemingly an obvious threat.

Donald Levine Has Passed Away...

...and while you may be wondering, who was Donald Levine, let me tell you he brought many a happy adventure to the lives of countless children (mostly boys) in the 1960s and 1970s. You see, he was the head of research and development for Hasbro, the toy company, back in the mid 1960s though 1970s. He also was the creator of the first action figure with moving parts - GI Joe (source).

GI Joe hit the market in late 1964, when I was 9 years old. I remember some of my friends had them and I pestered my mom for one for a long time before she finally relented and got me one. I cannot recall if it was at the same time I got GI Joe, or later, when I was also surprised with a GI Joe footlocker too. I imagine I would have gotten a GI Joe without any fuss and much sooner too had we not been piss poor. Now, when I look back on it, I am surprised I got one at all; at $4.00 it was an expensive toy, at least for us.

Cost be damned, it was among the best toys I ever had and it got a lot of play time. My son got to play with GI Joe too, not the original sized 11.5" figure but the smaller versions that came out in the 80s.

GI Joe was based upon honoring military veterans and was accessorized with military uniforms, helmets, guns and other weapons of all sorts. The idea to create an action figure, with moving parts, and to dress them in military uniforms to honor vets was Mr. Levine's idea, he was a vet himself. Imagine kids being allowed, even encouraged, to play with military action figures and that they would not get expelled or suspended if they brought them and their tiny toy weapons to school. It was another age.

I was looking around the web tonight for some pics of hot girls with guns to add to a gun forum post. I found quite a few shots of gals that certainly would turn most men's heads. I also found this photo of just a gal's face behind some ammo.

 

 

It is now my desktop background, and also at the top of my blog (for now). She looks awesome as I am sure is she in the flesh. By the way, to say the eyes are the windows of the soul would probably be an understatement in her case but I do kind of wonder who or what she is thinking about shooting while she selects that one cartridge betwixt thumb and forefinger!

My Laptop Is Back

So, I guess I will start blogging again, in earnest, soon. I don't know what all they did to it but it seems to be working. I know they replaced the hard drive, I now have to check that they replaced it with the correct type and size. They also reimaged the hard drive, which I suppose means they put the necessary software onto it and all the BS software too. And the last thing that I know they did was to replace the heat sink fan since one side of the computer was getting literally too hot to touch (surprisingly they did replace the motherboard with it getting that hot but on that time will tell if it will need to be replaced or not). Right now, so far, it seems fine but all I have done was install MS Office 2010 and install Norton One. I have yet to install the 109 important MS updates that MS is saying I need. That should take hours, I suppose. Hopefully once they are all installed, it will still work as good as it seems to be right now. Blogging regularly should recommence tomorrow.

Wating For Godot...

...maybe was about the worst wait imaginable at the time it was written but waiting for my HP Laptop to be repaired and returned is just about as bad for me. I say just about as bad because I do not have the clap with no chance of a cure; thus, it is not quite as bad by at least a little bit. (Never read Waiting For Godot? Then get yourself a copy and sit down with it, it is a short but classic read.) 

I sent in my laptop last Tuesday, May 13th.I got a call from HP on the following Thursday saying they had received it and would soon begin working on it. Not a peep since then but I am hoping it will be finished and sent back to me within a day or two at most. Not having a computer readily available gets me thinking and talking to myself about what I am thinking over. That really is not all that much fun, makes me feel sorry for those I have cornered when I was in blabbermouth mode.Oh well, I am hopeful it will be here soon.

Hooray, The Box Arrived

Five days after I called HP to get in home service on my laptop, the shipping box they sent me has arrived. Why a shipping box? Because they refused to service the laptop in home; they in essence said it was to complex a fix. Oh well, at least I can ship it out tomorrow or Friday. That will suck s I will be pretty much without a computer for a week or two. Gotta be done though.

Lack of Blog Posts...

As you can see, I sure as hell have not been blogging a lot lately. My laptop is on the fritz again, still working but needs repair as a lot of things are going screwy. Once again, HP has told me to ship it to them and will not do an in home repair even though I purchased the friggin expensive additional In Home Warranty.

Besides that, I just have had very little that has been of interest to me lately to blog about. Maybe I should not say that I have not had anything of interest but rather that nothing of interest to me has inspired me to write about it. In others words, while each day may be another day, most of what is going on has been the same old shit and I am not getting a rise out of it.

I am going to guess my laptop will not be fully functional for at least 10 days to two weeks since I have not even received a shipping box from HP yet (screw them, next time I'll probably buy a Dell). More blogging in between now and then but probably not much; more will follow a successful repair when I again have a laptop that is not a pain in the neck to use.

Oh well, I still keep checking on others' blogs and am enjoying many of them very much.

The Debate on The Death Penalty

The media is reporting on the execution of convicted killer Clayton Lockett and calling it botched. They report it took around 20 minutes for him to die after receiving a lethal injection. Reportedly the drugs used for the execution did not spread properly because of a problem with the killer's veins and he died of a heart attack after possibly suffering as evidenced by him eventually clenching his teeth, writhing and trying to lift his head. While the time it took him to die may have been much longer than expected because of a flaw in his veins, and while he may have suffered without intent by authorities for him to have unreasonably done so, why should anyone claim that to be a point against support for the death penalty? If in fact he was the killer as accused and convicted, I think it is good he is dead, justice has been served.

I disagree with any though who may say, in essence, that either it does not matter that he suffered greatly or that it actually is good he suffered (or in other words that it does not matter how justice is served as long as justice is the end). That he may have suffered more than was reasonably necessary would be sad if in fact he suffered. I do not think an execution should be gruesome to achieve justice and I believe that unreasonably horrendous executions should be illegal but I do not think for a moment that the death penalty should be banned, instead I think it should be accepted as law throughout every state. As for macabre executions, I am opposed to them but not out of ay sympathy for the convicted killer. I think that the reason behind not allowing them has little to do with the convicted and more to do with those who serve justice and they who live by it. I think that when justice is meted out in a gruesome and horrible manner it may well have become what it seeks to have ridded us of - namely a vile and heinous killer. Thus justice will have defeated its own purpose and we will have become no better than heinous killers should we execute in a hideous manner and then take perverted satisfaction in having done so. On the flip side, we would become little more than they who would sheepishly allow killers to run rampant, should we not execute convicted killers.

A problem, with executions in this country, seems to be that somehow all too many people have become convinced that a firing squad or hanging are terrible types of executions or that executions in and of themselves are cruel and unusual. Blame that on defense attorneys and on bleeding hearts. In fact, death by hanging and firing squad are usually quite swift executions if performed by someone following long tried and true methods. They are certainly more tolerable and give less of the horror effect, I think, than do electrocutions or gassings (but maybe that's just me as I see it). Regardless of what I think though, the fact is that there was, in past decades, a lot of argument about one type being more ghastly than another and that resulted in the call, from the bleeding hearts and eventually from the public, for something less objectionable. The answer was supposedly lethal injections. While they seem less horrendous than, and as efficient as, hangings or firing squads to me, the anti-death penalty crew has grabbed ahold of everything about them they can to try to abolish them as well as other forms of executions. When one goes wrong in method, it gives the 'antis' a lot to scream about. When they who support the use of the death penalty apparently take some sort of perverse pleasure, as opposed to merely taking satisfaction that justice was carried out, the antis have even more ammunition to try to shoot down the death penalty.

I, and I think most folks, would take satisfaction in knowing that the killer criminal was executed instead of taking the same satisfaction or more in knowing that he was executed and had suffered greatly as he died. That, if only, because it would give me satisfaction to know that while we sought justice and justice had been done, I and others had not become a horrible piece of turd like the convicted killer, who got his jollies by killing and/or who had absolutely no regard for his victims. Note, I am not saying that those who get satisfaction or even pleasure out of seeing justice done by way of a convicted killer being executed are the same as the criminal. They certainly are not the same if at the root of it they want justice to be carried out and that having been done is what satisfies or pleases them. I am saying though that getting pleasure out of seeing another man die in agony, and it is the agony that adds pleasure, while you in essence sit back and watch, with glee, as it if was a spectator sport is abhorrent.

As for the death penalty though, I fully support it in cases of convicted murderers and would find it even more abhorrent should we do away with it and allow them to live without just retribution.

How Many 22 Rimfires Are Enough?

I wish I could answer that question but there really doesn't seem to be an answer. Every time I see one, new or old, beaten up or pristine, with a fair to excellent price on it - I want it. of course, I don't buy all of em that I want, far from it, but I am more likely to buy a 22 than just about any other gun I might see at a firearms auction, an estate sale, a garage sale, or even at a gun show. It's not only because the are usually relatively inexpensive compared to larger caliber guns - I mean, I am not always cheap but that they have an allure for me with which no other gun has sung to me its Siren's song. That charm, the appeal they hold for me, is probably due to the fact that the first firearms I got to shoot were 22 rifles at summer camp. But it's beyond memories, more than nostalgia, at least for me.

22 Rimfire guns are pretty versatile. You can have a lot of fun with them hunting, target shooting, and plinking. The reasons for that is because the ammo is inexpensive compared to larger calibers so you can shoot a lot of it because they are affordable and so is the ammo for them. So it's easy to have a lot of them because they are relatively inexpensive and also to have a lot of ammo for them because that too is pretty cheap. Then there is what they don't have that makes them fun to shoot a lot and that is harsh recoil. They are easy not only on old muscles, joints and bones but also on young ones making them fun to shoot for youngsters and oldsters alike. I am not a grand-dad yet, not by a long shot, but you can bet that when I am, I will be teaching my grand kids to shoot with a 22 rimfire. I recently took my nephew out to a local range to teach him and used an Armscor 14 for his first lessons - a bolt action, box magazine fed, 22 repeater. He had a blast and wants to go again and now that I think of it I have been tardy and better get him back to the range again soon.

Now getting back to how many 22 rimfires are enough, as I said, I don't know. Right now, and mind you I am taking a shot in the dark here because I am not checking the gun safe, I figure I have four (4) .22 handguns and about 9 rifles in .22LR and .22WMR. Nah, there has got to be another one or three more of them around here somewhere. Then again, maybe not, although I know for sure I have had several others and sold them off at one time or another. Let me see if I can figure it a little better by trying to remember which ones I have right now (note all shoot .22LR unless otherwise noted):

Yep, having 14 of them would be a good number to have but it still does not answer the question of: "How many 22 rimfires are enough?".  There may not be an answer to that until they cremate what's left of me and spread my ashes out of a 12 gauge barrel (just thought of that and must tell the son, he'll do it for me) and then count how many rimfires I had before I croaked. While I am none to sure of how many are enough, I am certain that if they ever figure out the key to immortality, and give it to me, there will never be enough 22 rimfires (or rimfire ammo) out there for me.

An American Takes It

I am not big sports fan, how about you? Even if not one, how can you not follow, at least a little bit, the results of today's Boston Marathon after what happened last year. What happened this year may be a bit of a miracle, an American man won it, first time since 1983. He ran it never forgetting they who were killed last year in the bombing and never forgetting the police officer killed a couple of days later by the terrorists. He won it honoring they who fell. He wore the names of those killed on his chest. I would bet he won it too for all the victims who survived. 

I should also point out that he won it for America. It's evident that he did just that because when he crossed the finish line he draped himself with Old Glory and was quoted as saying: "I'm blessed to be an American and God bless America and God Bless Boston for this special day," (source). Hopefully he also ran with a thought in the back of his head for the terrorists, one that went something like this: "Fuck Off Terrorist Scum".

That he ran it, gave his best effort to it, honored the right folks and the right country all throughout it and did it all for the right reasons - I tip my hat to him. The man is respectful, has dignity and is patriotic. Today, all Americans, regardless of politics, should unite to be proud of him and proud to say Meb Keflezighi is an excellent American.

Happy 239th Anniversary

Happy 239th Anniversary (and to my wife, happy 28ty anniversary). If you, as an American citizen or as a legal resident alien, do not know of which event today is the 239th anniversary, you need to do checking up on this nation's history. Look up - The Shot Heard Round The World.

Did you look at the date, closely? I am willing to bet, that if you randomly selected a thousand American citizens and asked them: In what year did the American Revolution begin?, the majority would answer 1776 and if you asked them the specific date hostilities commenced most by far would say July 4, 1776. Of course, as you know, they would be wrong by a long shot as the war had already been under way for well over a year by then.

Breakfast Tonight - Just A Few Hours Late...

...but it was well worth the wait. I don't know why, but all I had today, up through about 15 minutes ago, was a cup of black coffee and a few bottles of water. Then, about 20 minutes ago, I suddenly  got pretty hungry and decided to head upstairs to raid my son's stash in the fridge. Last night he invited me to try some of the spicy octopus that he had picked up at a local Korean market. It came to mind tonight and I said "why not" to myself. When I looked in the fridge I noticed he had some other delectable looking things like sliced marinated pork belly, some really thin but fatty looking pork cops, a grilled sardine that he made last night, the octopus and a container of marinated seaweed.



A quick and easy meal, especially since all I had to do was to
heat it up in the microwave. It was absolutely friggin delicious.

I opted for the octopus, seaweed and some left over fingerling potatoes (red, white and deep purple) that my wife had made a few days ago. I planted about 5 of the baby octopi in a bed of the seaweed, tossed the taters on the plate next to that and then nuked it all on high for two minutes. It came out looking nice, smelling great and tasting even better. The only think that might have improved it would have been some rice wine or an icy cold beer but sadly I had neither; but of course the potato vodka that I did have went pretty well with it. Someday soon, I am going to have to try making my own version of that octopus dish, it could become a staple around here. By the way, baby octopus is very easy to prepare and cook and it goes well in lots of different styles of dishes. It's also very, very, very yummy.

A hat tip to my wife for broiling those taters and to my son for bring those dishes home from the Korean market; next thing I know he'll bring home some kimchee or so he seems inclined.

The BLM Has Virtually Disappeared...

...from the Bundy ranch and surrounding areas and that may lead one to believe that they have given up on the strategy of rustling cattle and placing the Bundys under siege. My guess is that they have not given up at all and while some in DC are saying they are going to handle this in the courts now, I have to wonder if that really will be their next step. My guess is that they are playing a waiting game for the patriots, who showed up to support the Bundys, to feel a false sense of security or accomplishment and then to lose interest and depart the area. Only then will the BLM goon squad will reappear, in force, on the scene. My guess would be that the BLM will show itself again, in fewer numbers, by next Monday to Wednesday and will gradually increase in numbers over the following days.

It's not like they did not leave clues behind. According to one source, an email sent to me by the Oath Keepers, while BLM or other federal agents are not apparent in the area, they left equipment behind. You can bet they will be back not only to retrieve it but to use it as they originally had planned. The following is the open statement in the email I just mentioned:

"NOTE: First, at the moment things are quiet here.   99% of the rumors on the internet are either blatantly false or wildly inaccurate.  No strong presence of federal agents has been seen. Remnants of BLM's recent sojourn here are still present, such as the lights they had put up at their "field-headquarters" and no doubt we are under surveillance of all kinds, but there is no overt, visible massing of federal law enforcement."

Anyway, if I am right, the government will commence a redeployment  of forces at or near the Bundy ranch next week. That would mean that April the 19th will have passed and that it will be at least a few days behind them. My hypothesis is that they think, that any patriotic zeal built around the anniversary of the first day of the American Revolution will have ebbed and the patriots supporting the Bundys will have sufficiently dwindled in number at the ranch for BLM to start bullying the Bundys by rustling cattle again and sat bullying their supporters by again setting up things like First Amendment Zones. Of course, they may be figuring wrongly as the Oath Keepers, and hopefully other groups, are calling for more volunteers to head out that way through and after the 19th.

I doubt there will be much action, if any, at the ranch from now until at least a couple of days after this coming Saturday. If I was a gambling man, I would place a bet in Vegas on it developing in just that manner and time frame.

Please note that the Oath Keepers are looking for member volunteers to assist at the Bundy ranch if at all possible for you to make it there.
