Have Been A Bit Out Of Touch Lately...

...and have not read the news in days nor blogged anything since Wednesday until today. That all thanks to being a bit more busy than usual with my working four days last week and training & qualifications for both LEOSA and my armed guard license most of Saturday morning and afternoon, then hitting Costco for my weekly shopping, all followed by a family diner on Saturday evening. Right after the dinner, which was one of those dinners you live to regret attending (most of it was fine until the check came) I left in sort of a huff after paying the bill. I hopped into the old Corolla and headed thatta way, which was no way in particular. As I drove along the always congested Cross Bronx Expressway (I 95), I decided to head to upstate NY.

I wound up on route 17 (I think they now call it I-86) and drove on the slow side while headed toward Windsor, NY a familiar stomping ground of many years for me. I stopped in a bare bones rest area, maybe 15 to 20 miles before the exit I used to get off for my uncle's farm, one without even marked parking spaces,. I stepped out to answer the call of Mother Nature, yawned in the process, and decided to hunker down for the night. It had to have been around 11PM or so. That has got to be the first time I can remember in years that I slept in my car. I shook, shivered and shook for some of the night, all I had for a blanket was a goose down coat. Damn it was cold for sleeping with the temps in the low twenties overnight. Every now and then I woke up shivering and turned on the car and then five or so minutes later turned on the heater to warm things up a bit. Surprisingly, it wasn't the most uncomfortable night's sleep. In fact, it was not too bad. Might have been better had I been drunk but alas the couple of beers I had at the beginning of the dinner had no effect by then.

Drove around yesterday, aimlessly hoping to find something to do - maybe a tag sale or auction or whatever. Wound stopping at a few places to maybe buy some ammo but with there super high prices all I picked up was a compact pistol cleaning kit, a jar of Hoppe's #9 and some patches. Somewhere along the way, I had remembered I forgot to clean my gun after the qualifications the day before. I stopped at the Cascade Valley Forest and did a did a field cleaning of the Glock 26. I had thought I was going to go for a hike there but decided against it since I didn't have any boots with me - all I had was a pir of running/hiking shoes that were not waterproof.

I wound up heading out after that toward Oquaga Creek State Park and stopped just shy of there. Regardless of not having the right shoes with me, I could no longer resist the urge to go for a hike and went for a short one in the Arctic-China State Forest adjacent to Oquaga Creek State Park. Had a short but decent hike for about an hour. Spotted some deer sign here and there and a few bear tracks in the mud along a trail. Saw a red squirrel but left it breathing. Yes, my socks got wet despite my best efforts to walk around soggy spots.

After that, I just headed home along a pretty scenic route. Stopped over in Walton, NY at a Subway and got myself a foot long meatball hero with lots of onions, pickles and jalapenos. That was exactly what I needed to remind me I needed to head home for my wife's cooking. Got home just in time to watch The Walking Dead and wolfed down about 3/4 a pound of corned beef and a couple of hunks of Irish soda bread while watching. She had waited until Sunday dinner to make corned beef, boiled potatoes and cabbage dinner. That was worth coming home sooner than later because by tonight there probably will be nothing left over. Pretty much passed out after that. I don't know if it's been because of work or something else but I have been pretty much exhausted by the end of each day over the last week or two.

Any which way, I imagine I owe you a bit more blogging this week than last, will try to get that done.

All he best,
GB
