Today In History - An Era Comes To An End

"In 1957, shortly after midnight, the last of New York's electric trolleys completed its final run from Queens to Manhattan." (reference: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/history)

I was not even 2 years old yet, and something that would fascinate me in later years had already come to its end. When I was young though, there were remnants of trolley tracks set in cobblestone streets throughout much of New York City's 5 boroughs. For some reason they (the tracks and the cobblestones) always fascinated me. Although most have been removed, I would venture to say that somewhere in New York City some of those trolley tracks, and a lot of those cobblestones, still remain - probably covered by black-top; and they are probably one of the reasons for a lot of bumps, and for some of the crappy roads in NYC.
All the best,
Glenn B
